RESEARCH NEWS FROM ARMAK

ARMAK INTRODUCES TWO NEW QUATERNARIES

Richard A. Reck Director of Commercial Development Armak Industrial Chemicals Division commercial development activities are involved with new molecules developed in either Armak's central research laboratory at McCook, Illinois or those developed in the research centres of Akzo Chemie. Frequently, too, Armak's customers propose new chemicals which they believe our organic chemical expertise can help to produce. Thus our commercial development activities generally find us in three areas: New chemicals for which there is no known use but whose structure might suggest certain industrial applications; New chemicals for which we know a use and which we introduce to selected industries; Finally in areas where we are well versed with market needs, new chemicals which help solve market needs. Some of the industries with which the commercial development group has had particularly broad experience include textiles (fabric softeners),petroleum (oil additives, fuel additives),mining (flotation reagents, flocculants) and agricultural chemicals (adjuvants, emulsifiers).

Ethoduoquad" R/15-50and Ethoquad9' R/13-50 are the two newest additions to Armak Industrial Chemical Division's extensive line of quaternary a m m o n i u m c o m p o u n d s . Both of these products differ significantly from other quaternaries previously offered. They have higher HLB values than similar monoalkyl quaternaries, exhibiting g o o d solubility in water a n d polar solvents with increased compatibility with anionic compounds. Ethoquad R/13-50 is a monoalkyl quaternary, while Ethoduoquad R/15-50 is a diquaternary ammonium salt. Both are less corrosive to mild steel than conventional quaternaries. Since both of these products are strongly substantive to negatively c h a r g e d surfaces, they are g o o d candidates for use as flocculants in water a n d sewage treatment; as metalworking additives; as active ingredients in hair conditioners a n d as mineral flotation agents. Their action as effective wetting agents recommends them for use as pigment wetting and dispersing agents or as potential fiber antistatic agents a n d lubricants. Other suggested

application areas include: liquid starch stabilizers; metal cleaning a n d polishing emulsifiers; latex foaming agents. With the introduction of Ethoquad R/13-50 a n d EthoduoquadR/1550, Armak continues its tradition of firsts in the fatty chemical field. In the late 40's Armak was first to introd u c e fatty quaternaries. In the early 50's Armak was the first to apply quaternaries as fabric softeners. Today, Armak leads the way in new quaternary developments. For complete information on Armak's new quaternaries, write for Bulletin No. 80-4 a n d 80-5.

1020 mild steel coupons were tested for 7 days at 130°F according to NACE standard TM 01 -69. Coupon # 1 was immersed in Armak's new Ethoduoquad" R/15-50 while coupon * 2 was tested in Duoquad" T-50.
