RESEARCH NEWS FROM ARMAK

NEW ROUTE TO SHORT-CHAIN AMINE Armak Industrial Chemicals Division introduces the first of a number of short-chain amines made by a new process. These new amines share a number of important characteristics including high amine value, low melting point and solubilities which extend over a wide range of solvents. Armeen® L-8D, a proprietary short-chain amine, is the first member of this new family of amines. C 8 H 17 NH 2 is the major component of this product. Bulletin 81 -7 describes the physical and chemical characteristics of Armeen L-8D.

These new short-chain amines are being offered as candidates for corrosion inhibitors, mineral extraction reagents, pesticide intermediates, oil field chemicals and lube additive intermediates. Armak's new process for manufacturing shortchain amines is based on an unconventional method which promises to assure competitive and stable prices. The company is also working on a number of derivatives based on its novel shortchain chemistry. By offering these amines, Armak broadens its line of aliphatic amines.

ARMAK COMPLETES 55 MILLION POUND FATTY AMINE EXPANSION Armak Company has completed a 55 million pound expansion at its Morris, Illinois plant. Included in the expansion were several new batch hydro units. The expansion gives Armak the capability to produce a wider range of products than heretofore possible. The Duomeen V series announced earlier along with the short-chain amines such as Armeen L-8D are examples of product line diversification now underway at Armak Industrial Chemicals Division. The new units are all controlled via computerized instrumentation thus insuring consistent quality from lot to lot. Other process improvements made at the Morris plant assure Armak customers the finest quality amines and amine derivatives from North America's largest fatty amine plant.

Dynamic graphic displays are part of new computer controls installed at the Morris plant.

Bulletin 81-6 contains revised and updated data on the physical and chemical characteristics of Armak quaternary ammonium salts. For a copy of this technical publication, write to Armak Industrial Chemicals Division, Dept. A, 300 South Wacker Drive, Chicago, Illinois 60606.
