Low-Temperature Solvent Crystallized Oleic Acid Another new product has been added to A r m o u r ' s line of fatty acids. Already t h e manufacturer of t h e most complete line of high-purity distilled fatty acids t h a t can b e found anywhere, t h e A r m o u r Chemical Division now offers low-temp e r a t u r e solvent crystallized oleic acid. T h i s exclusive process offers users of oleic acid a p r o d u c t t h a t h a s advantages n o t found i n ordinary distilled or pressed products. T h e extremely low temperatures employed guarantee a substantially lower saturr A acid content t h a n conventional ti ,s of oleic acid. In addition, solvent crystallized oleic acids are esterfree materials since the solvent used is not reactive with fatty acids. This new product is characterized b y bland odor a n d h a s excellent heat stability. Armour's low-titer White Oleic Acid meets U. S. Pharmacopeia specifications a n d is recommended for those uses t h a t require a light color a s well a s a low titer. F o r applications t h a t require a low titer b u t n o t a very light color, low-titer Distilled R e d Oil is recommended.

Cationic Emulsifiers for Insecticides M a n y industrial emulsion applications utilize the special properties of cationic emulsions. Because these emulsions are m a d e with cationic active emulsifiers, their oil phases can be exhausted on m a n y types of surfaces. I n applying oily materials t o surfaces by means of emulsions, greater a n d more uniform pickup and better adherence of t h e oil is obtained when the emulsion is cationic. Arquad 2C (oil-soluble quaternary a m m o n i u m compound) is an excellent emulsifier and strongly cationic. However, to insure maximum hard water stability t h e presence of an Ethofat (non-ionic) is also used in t h e concentrate. D e m a n d for these chemicals h a s been particularly heavy a n d we regret tha" we arc n o t always able to meet this demand. However, we expect this situation will

improve soon. In t h e meantime, your experimental work w i t h these chemicals will permit their earlier use in your products. The following are suggested formulas for effective cationic insecticide emulsions:

Use of Fatty Acids in Insecticides, Fungicides and Disinfectants F a t t y acids are widely used in preparing spray emulsions for insecticides, fungicides a n d disinfectants. A soluble oil base is prepared in which t h e active ingredients of t h e finished spray a r e dispersed. Before application, t h i s base is diluted with water. T h e emulsifying action in these oil solutions is brought a b o u t by t h e presence of soaps, sulfonated oils, e t c . Soda, potash, or triethanolamine are t h e preferred saponification agents for m a k i n g these soaps. Generally these soaps are formed "in s i t u " by the saponification of vegetable fatty acids, fish oil fatty acids, oleic acids, etc., with t h e desired alkali or a l k a l i n e - l i k e material. Whenever practical t h e use of emulsions for insecticides, disinfectants, etc., is t h e most economical m e t h o d to e m ploy, since a n y desired dilution with water may be obtained. I t is also possible to control t h e emulsion stability so t h a t either quick breaking or stable emulsions result, t h u s controlling t h e release of t h e active ingredient after application. F o r these emulsions the Armour Chemical Division recommends R e d Oils a n d Oleic Acids. FREE INFORMATIVE BOOKLET — W r i t e
