Phosphoranyl r a d i c a l s (1) are t e t r a c o v a l e n t species most t y p i c a l l y formed by the o x i d a t i v e a d d i t i o n r e a c t i o n shown i n

equation 1 (1). ESR evidence concerning the s t r u c t u r e of such r a d i c a l s i s abundant and a very recent review i s a v a i l a b l e (2). The majority are n e a r - t r i g o n a l - b i p y r a m i d a l (TBP) i n s t r u c t u r e

A number of t h e o r e t i c a l c a l c u  l a t i o n s (3-7) are c o n s i s t e n t with a somewhat d i s t o r t e d TBP s t r u c t u r e and a l s o with the r e s u l t s of a n i s o t r o p i c ESR i n v e s  t i g a t i o n s (8-12) which show a high degree of s p i n density r e s i d i n g on the a p i c a l l i g a n d s . Structure 3 represents the HOMO c a l c u  l a t e d (3) f o r Ρ H 4 . C e r t a i n but not all phosphoranyl r a d i c a l s phosphorus-substituted by a r y l groups appear to be t e t r a h e d r a l (13-17) with the odd e l e c t r o n i n the π-system, 4. A C geometry i s proposed f o r PhPCl (18,19). The s u p e r f i c i a l s i m i l a r i t y of 1 to pentacovalent phosphorus systems is apparent i n t h e i r common TBP geometries and i s empha s i z e d by s t r u c t u r e 2. Structure 2 is u s e f u l f o r stereochemical representations and a l s o because it is e a s i l y w r i t t e n , though we acknowledge its inability to represent a c c u r a t e l y e l e c t r o n i c structure. The edges of the diagram connect permutamers which can be i n t e r c o n v e r t e d by Mi i s o m e r i z a t i o n s . The C-T plane (perpendicular to the page) separates i n i t i a l adducts which could be formed from a t t a c k of R 0 · on e i t h e r c i s ( l e f t s i d e ) or trans phosphite. The P-0 plane separates permuta mers whose β s c i s s i o n gives trans product from the c i s phosphate generating ones. The p o s i t i o n of R'O i n each permutamer i s shown by eq or ap. The r e t e n t i v e nature of the observed oxida t i o n s excludes 14, 24, and 35 as i n i t i a l l y formed phosphoranyls from cis-12 or 14, 24, 35 from trans-12. C l e a r l y , no extensive amount of Mi i s o m e r i z a t i o n of any of the remaining p o t e n t i a l i n i t i a l adducts occurs, e.g. 25 -*· 14 o r 13 ->· Ζ ϊ 15, as l o s s of r e t e n t i v e o x i d a t i o n s t e r e o s p e c i f i c i t y would r e s u l t . Since AG for β-scission of these intermediates with R equal t-Bu i s at l e a s t 11 kcal/mol (24,25), the Mi permutations have o v e r a l l b a r r i e r greater than t h i s . Further s i m p l i f i c a t i o n of t h i s scheme i s p o s s i b l e . Consider r e a c t i o n of c i s - 1 2 . From ESR evidences i t i s c l e a r that only odd e l e c t r o n e q u a t o r i a l phosphoranyls have enough s t a b i l i t y to be observed (2). I n i t i a l adducts with odd e l e c t r o n a p i c a l (13, 23, 34), t h e r e f o r e , should be r a p i d l y converted to more s t a b l e ones: 24, 14, 45, 25, or 15. Moreover, p r e f e r e n t i a l i n i t i a l i n t r o d u c t i o n of R 0 a p i c a l i s a l s o l i k e l y (45, 25, 15 formation) s i n c e a p i c a l bonds are expected to be longer and presumably weaker (3,4). (Such an assumption i s g e n e r a l l y made i n pentacovalent phosphorus chemistry. (37)) We can thus center our a t t e n t i o n on 45, 25, and 15.
