T i t a n i u m Dioxide, widely used as a pigment base and plastics filler must have m a x i m u m freedom f r o m deleterious impurities w h i c h might cause physical degradation of the finished product. These three spectra are of samples from different sources. The impurities can be seen and measured quite readily; sample ' C is the purest. Compound electrode t e c h n i q u e s have opened up new f elds of application for the AEI MS7 Spark Source mass spectrometer. Now for the first time t h e purity of a c o m p o u n d in powder form can be determined and measured to 0.01 ppm by this method. The t e c h n i q u e is simple, and an analyst can be trained in a f e w days both to operate the MS7 and interpret his results. Equal amounts of the powder and spectroscopic grade graphite are c o m p o u n d e d and formed into homogeneous electrodes; o n sparking, ions for analysis are formed that are truly representative of the sample. A s the tolerance level in impurities in materials falls, quick and economical methods of analysis become more and more important.
