Books tive experimental procedures are described in detail to enable the reader to carry out the analysis without further consultation. In the case of some functional groups t h a t may be determined by means of gas chromatography, but for which published procedures are not available, the reader is provided with some specific suggestions. T h e literature published during the past 20 years, including some as recent as 1976, is surveyed.

Vibrational Spectra and Structure, Vol. 5. James R. Durig, Ed. xiv + 295 pages. Elsevier Scientific Publishing Co., 52 Vanderbilt Ave., New York, N.Y. 10017. 1976. $38.50

This fifth volume of the series on vibrational spectroscopy contains four review articles written by eight contributors. In Chapter 1, Barraclough, Beattie, and Everett review the study of the shapes of inorganic molecules as determined by the utilization of vibra-

tional infrared and Raman spectroscopy. In Chapter 2, J. F. Scott shows the utility of vibrational Raman spectroscopy as a probe of solid-state structure and structural phase transitions. T h e following chapter by Thomas Spiro examines the scope and direction of resonance-Raman studies as they apply to biological systems. Finally, the last chapter written by Wurrey, Durig, and Carreira reviews the application of Raman spectroscopy for determination of molecular potential functions governing large-amplitude motions for several molecules. T h e book is reproduced from typewritten text.

Residue Reviews, Vol. 6 1 . Francis A. Gunther, Ed. vi + 160 pages. SpringerVerlag New York Inc., 175 Fifth Ave., New York, N.Y. 10010. 1976. $16.80

T h e compound receiving maximum attention in this particular volume is DDT. One hundred and twelve out of 160 total pages are devoted to a review of the environmental and health hazards posed by the use of this pesticide. Three chapters on the subject each written by different authors examine D D T metabolism in microbial systems; stability of D D T in foods and feeds, transformation in cooking and food processing, and removal during food and feed processing; and bioconcentration aspects of D D T in the environment. T h e last two chapters survey the bioassay techniques for foliar-applied herbicides, and physiological effects and metabolism of gossypol.

ASTM Publications The following are available from the American Society for Testing and Materials, 1916 Race St., Philadelphia, Pa. 19103 {USA, Canada, and Mexico add 3% shipping charges. Other countries add 5% ) 1976 Annual Book of ASTM Standards on Water, Part 3 1 . 976 pages. 1976. $31

This book contains 131 ASTM standards of which 15% are new, revised, or changed in status since the 1975 edition. Among the new standards in this edition are: an infrared analysis of waterborne oils, a practice for identification of waterborne oils, a test for radium-226 in water, a test for chlorinated phenoxy acid herbicides in water, and a test for accumulated deposition in a steam generator tube.
