Diehl is recipient of t h e Fisher Award in Analytical Chemistry, sponsored b y t h e Fisher Scientific C o . Objective of t h e award is t o recognize a n o u t s t a n d i n g contribution t o analytical chemistry b y a resident of t h e United States or Canada. Diehl, 45-year-old analyst with a B . S . a n d P h . D . from t h e University of Michigan, h a s been a t Iowa S t a t e since 1939. H e h a s done m u c h work in coordination a n d chelate chemistry a n d in applying electronics t o analytical techniques. H e is widely recognized as a teacher a n d writer. W a s h b u r n is recipient of t h e Beckm a n Award in Chemical I n s t r u m e n t a tion, sponsored b y B e c k m a n I n s t r u m e n t s , I n c . T h i s award, established in 1953, recognizes a n o u t s t a n d i n g cont r i b u t i o n in t h e development of instrum e n t s for chemical analysis or analytical i n s t r u m e n t a t i o n of industrial processes. W a s h b u r n , age 5 3 , holds a B . S . a n d P h . D . from t h e University of California and a n M . S . from M a s s a c h u s e t t s I n s t i t u t e of Technology. H i s degrees a r e all in t h e field of electrical engineering. Following a period of university teaching a n d industrial experience, he became vice president of Consolidated Engineering Corp. in 1937. H e h a s done m u c h research in developing t h e technique and promotion of t h e use of t h e mass spectrometer as a n analytical tool.
