Audio Attachment For a Simple Scaler

M o s t of the high school science teachers who participated in the In-Service Institutes in Nuclear Science offered hv Duauesne Universitv and sun~orted ~ suggested jointly by the U: S. AEC aud the N S have the desirability of an audio attachment for the scalers which have been loaued to them by the Institutes for use in their high schools. The ulstruments provided by the AEC for the Institutes, until approximately the summer of 1964, were of the scaler-ratemeter type with an audio output. For the past two years, however, the ratemeter feature has been omitted from the available instruments (Nucor Model RC-594 and Tracerlab Model 16/U). While the teachers do not see a particular need for the ratemeter feature, they feel that an audio output would be especially desirable when the scalers are used for classroom demonstrations. The audio attachment described here was designed for use with Nucor Model BC-594 and Tracerlab Model 16/U scalers. It is a simple three-stage transistor amplifier operated by a 9-volt transistor battery and equipped with a volume control and a speaker. All components are housed in a 41/4 X 6 X 4 in. meter case, and can be purchased for approximately $16. The circuit and cable connections to the Nucor Model BC594 scaler are shown in Figure 1. The audio attachment operates better with the Tracerlab 16/U scaler when input polarity is reversed.

If it is desired to use the attachment with either instrument, DPDT toggle switch of the ON-OFF-ON type can be installed (Fig. 2). The terminal board (J105) in the Nucor scaler is located under the chassis, and terminal C on this board should be connected to the center of chassis jack J1. The proper terminal of the SPDT switch (5104, TEST: ON-OFF) in the Tracerlab scaler can be easily reached from the underside of the instrument. The list of parts used in the construction of the attachment is presented in the table. Copies of detailed instructions for constructing the attachment are available on request.
