’ AUGUST EVENT

yet, create your own and add it to the list. It is not too late to celebrate the International Year of Chemistry!

NEACT Summer Conference: Chemistry in Today’s World

This is the 72nd NEACT Summer Conference, scheduled for Aug 1 4 at St. Joseph’s College in Standish, Maine. This fourday conference will explore chemistry’s solutions to many of the world’s problems, including energy, clean water, and medicine. Workshop participants will have the opportunity to learn pedagogical techniques and new activities for their classrooms. Some of the many topics include: Combating oil spills, water treatment, forensic chemistry, solutions for energy problems, synthesizing medicinal compounds, portable interactive white boards, concept mapping, green chemistry, chemistry modeling, and field trips. The cost is $395 for everything, with options for a daily or commuting rate. Financial aid is available. See http://www.neact. org/ (accessed Jun 2011) for more information or contact Kathy Siok [email protected].

Earth Science Week 2011

October and Earth Science Week (October 9 15, 2011) will be arriving sooner than you think. Plan now to make it easier to incorporate earth science activities into your schedule. This year’s theme, “Our Ever-Changing Earth”, can be used to help students learn about natural processes that change the planet. The Earth Science Week 2011 Toolkit is now available. Find more detailed information at http://www.earthsciweek.org/ (accessed Jun 2011).

’ WEB SITES OF ONGOING INTEREST A number of Web sites regularly add information about programs and funding sources for science educators. These sites sometimes post dates and deadlines too late to make it into print. Here is a partial list of such sites. ’ EARLY SEPTEMBER DEADLINE Dorothy and Moses Passer Education Fund

This Fund was established by a generous donation of Dorothy and Moses Passer. Moses (Mike) Passer was for many years the head of the ACS Education Division. Grants from this fund are for teachers at two- and four-year colleges or universities that do not have any advanced degree programs in the chemical sciences. The awards support continuing education activities that must be directly related to the applicant’s teaching and must take the applicant away from his or her campus. The next application deadline for this fund is September 1, 2011. Find information about the history of the award, details about the application process, and lists of previous awardees at http://www.divched.org/index.php?module=webpage&id=19 (accessed Jun 2011).

’ PREPARING FOR THE FALL TERM International Year of Chemistry

Many events of the International Year of Chemistry have already taken place, yet events and activities are still being added to the celebration. A look at the IYC Web site found 8 activities added during the first week of June. The total number of activities is now well over 900. The “events” schedule shows nearly 20 scheduled for August. Do take time to explore http://www. chemistry2011.org/ (accessed Jun 2011). We hope you will be inspired to join in some of the events and activities—or better Copyright r 2011 American Chemical Society and Division of Chemical Education, Inc.
