Award-Winning Organometallic Chemistry: Le Grand Prix Achille Le Chimique de France (SCF) Bel of the Societe

S

tarting this year, Organometallics has begun to publish reviews, accounts, or similar invited articles from organometallic chemists who have earned awards from chemical societies or comparable bodies worldwide.1 The award need not be restricted to organometallic chemistry, but the laudatio should encompass accomplishments in organometallic chemistry. Last year, Prof. Guy Bertrand was named the laureat du Prix Le Bel 2010 by the Societe Chimique de France (SCF), or French Chemical Society. The prize was conferred on May 2, 2011, in a ceremony at the Universite de Provence Aix-Marseille 1.2 The laudatio, “pour ses contributions importantes a la chimie organique et ses responsabilites toulousaines et californiennes” recognizes not only his scientific contributions, which have centered around stable carbene and main-group organometallic chemistry, but also the leadership roles he has played in Toulouse, France, and Riverside, California. At the latter location, which he has called home for over 10 years, he heads a research group affiliated with both the University of California and the French CNRS. This prize was established in 1976 in honor of the French chemist Joseph Achille Le Bel (1847 1930), considered the founder of modern stereochemistry. It consists of an honorarium and a certificate. There are many previous winners who will be familiar to the organometallic community, but rather than risk accidentally omitting someone, readers are referred to the SCF web page.3 An account in which Prof. Bertrand describes some of the achievements that led to this award begins on the following page. A biographical sketch can be found therein. Guy, we congratulate you on this nice honor but are uncertain as to whether we should toast you with wine from France or California. Maybe both? In any case, we look forward to much continued exciting chemistry in the upcoming years. John A. Gladysz Editor in Chief
