Award-Winning Organometallic Chemistry: The 2012 ACS Award in Organometallic Chemistry

I

forward to your continued scientific leadership and many future thought-provoking papers from your laboratory.

n this issue, we again recognize a recent recipient of the ACS Award in Organometallic Chemistry, which can be considered the namesake award of this journal.1,2 The honoree, Professor Philip P. Power of the University of California, Davis, was presented with the prize following a banquet held at the San Diego ACS meeting on March 27, 2012. As shown in Figure 1, the award consists of a framed certificate, as well as a $5000 grant. The sponsor of the award, the Dow Chemical Company Foundation, was represented at the ceremony by Dr. James C. Stevens, someone with many accomplishments in organometallic chemistry in his own right. Professor Power is well-known for his decades of trailblazing research in main-group organometallic chemistry, and his laudatio reads as follows: “For recent achievements in organometallic chemistry: extending our knowledge to new classes of compounds and demonstrating that these unusual compounds have remarkable reactivity with important small molecules”. A brief biography of Professor Power, who hails from Ireland and has spent his entire scientific career at the University of California, Davis, can be found in the award article that follows. Phil, please accept our congratulations for your numerous accomplishments that served as the basis for this award, as well as the significant portion of your oeuvre that has greatly impacted modern inorganic chemistry. You have taught us much about bonding and discovered several unexpected reactivity modes that could only have been dreamed about without the unusual molecules synthesized by you and your co-workers. We look
