Award-Winning Organometallic Chemistry: the Israeli Chemical Society (ICS) Outstanding Young Scientist Prize

O

rganometallics invites organometallic chemists who have earned awards from chemical societies or similar bodies worldwide to author reviews, accounts, or full papers that are emblematic of their work being recognized.1 The award need not be restricted to organometallic chemistry, but the laudatio should mention achievements in organometallic chemistry. On February 9, 2011, Prof. Arkadi Vigalok was presented with the Israeli Chemical Society Outstanding Young Scientist Prize during the opening ceremonies of the 76th annual meeting of the Israeli Chemistry Society. This honor is bestowed each year on the most outstanding Israeli chemist under the age of 40. The prize was inaugurated in 1987, and a list of previous winners can be found on the ICS Web site.2 Among the many famous names are several others who have authored papers in this journal (Ronny Neumann, Ilan Marek, Milko van der Boom). The recipient receives a certificate and a ca. $1000 cash prize. The laudatio for Prof. Vigalok reads “...for his outstanding and pioneering contributions in metal-mediated formation of carbon fluorine bonds and for the synthesis and applications of calixarene compounds as ligands in metal mediated transformations”. A review in which he describes some of these discoveries begins on the following page. A biographical sketch can be found therein. A hearty “mazel tov” and rousing “l'chayim” from all of us, Arkadi!3 We look forward to much more outstanding organometallic chemistry from your laboratory in the years to come. John A.
