Herman F. Mark, emeritus dean and professor at Polytechnic Institute of New York; has received the Wolf Foundation Prize in Chemistry at ceremonies last month before the Israeli Knesset in Jerusalem. The award was given to Mark for his contributions to understanding the structure and behavior of natural and synthetic polymers. The Wolf Foundation, established in 1976 in Israel to represent members of the Wolf family around the world, gives $100,000 prizes in the fields of agriculture, mathematics, chemistry, physics, and medicine. Before joining Polytechnic in 1940 as professor of organic chemistry, Mark worked in Austria and Germany, where he headed a team that did the original work on elucidating the nature of polymers. Mark's principal research has been on x-rays and electrons for the study of the structure of matter; on the synthesis, characterization, reactions and properties of natural and synthetic polymers, such as cellulose, rubber, proteins, starch; and all types of synthetic products. He has published more than 500 original and review articles and has written some 20 books on various topics related to polymer chemistry. Mark is the only 1979 recipient to receive the whole prize in his field. The other recipients are: Agriculture, Jay L. Lush, Distinguished Professor, Iowa State University, and Sir Kenneth Blaxter, Rowett Research Institute, Aberdeen, Scotland; mathematics, Jean Leray, professor emeritus, College de France, Paris, and André Weil, professor emeritus, Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton; physics, George Uhlenbeck, Rockefeller University, and Guiseppe Occhialini, University of Milan; and medicine, Roger W. Sperry, California Institute of Technology, Arvid Carlsson, Gothenburg University, f and Oleh Hornykiewicz, University of Vienna. Horia Metiu, assistant professor of chemistry, University of California, Santa Barbara, is the first recipient of the Exxon Faculty Fellowship in Solid State Chemistry. The $5000 unrestricted fellowship is sponsored by Exxon and administered by the Solid State Chemistry Subdivision of the ACS Division of Inorganic Chemistry. Metiu's research has centered on the interaction of atoms and molecules with solid surfaces. Paul W. Morgan, retired Du Pont Co. chemist, will receive the 15th annual Thomas Midgley Medal of the ACS Detroit Section on Oct. 16. The medal honors Morgan for his development of Kevlar aramid fibers for use in the automotive industry.
