The National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering has available a record of doctorate recipients in the US. since 1920 ( I ) . Doctorate degrees are defined as a third-level research degree, such as PhD, ScD, and EdD, professional degrees, such as MD and DVM. are not included. A comDuter tane of the datahase that contains the record of approximately fifi2,SM) doccurates for the period 1920-bU is available from the Council (2). Since 1957, the file has been maintained from data submitted by each doctoral recipient. Between 1920 and 1957, information on doctoral recipients was obtained from registrars' records and graduation lists. Even though the file may be incomplete for the period 1920to 1956, it is not thought to be biased against any particular undergraduate institution (3). , ,

I thought it might be of interest to readers of THIS JOURNAL t o learn which colleges and universities provided the pool of undergraduates who subsequently received their doctorates in chemistry. The Council's record was searched, using the Minitah statistical software program, to determine the bacTable 1.

calaureate origins of the doctorate recioients in chemistrv from 1920-80.- he results are shown fo; the top 75 colleges and universities in Table 1(for both sexes combined), Table 2 (for males only), and Table 3 (for females only). I t is interesting to note that, in spite of smaller enrollments, institutions that are primarily devoted to undergraduate education appear on the lists. For both sexes combined and for males only, the following undergraduate institutions are represented: Oberlin, Franklin and Marshall, Hope, St. OM, Wooster, DePauw, and Union. For females, a larger number of undergraduate institutions are represented: Mount Holyoke, Vassar, Smith, Wellesley, Goucher, Oberlin, Simmons, Randolph-Macon, Swarthmore, Agnes-Scott, Reed, Wooster, Wheaton, Chestnut Hill, Mundelein, Mt. St. Vincent, Rosemont, Rosary, and Carleton. Not surprisingly, the number of females who obtained doctorate degrees in chemistry during the period covered is small. For rankings of only undergraduate institutions, the reader is referred to Stanley-Frederick (4).
