ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY

The Unilux II series of liquid scintillation counting systems is a series of controlled-temperature, high-performance systems for counting singlelabeled, dual-labeled, or intermixed samples of soft-beta-emitting radioisotopes such as 14 C and 3 H . The Unilux II system, in convenient benchtop format, consists of the cooling chamber, two independent counting channels, and a fully automatic, antijam, 100-sample-capacity sample changer. System options permit the addition of a third analyzer channel and scaler, as well as a choice of 22e Ra or 133 Ba automatic external standardization. Nuclear-Chicago Corp., 3 5 9 E. Howard Ave., Des Plaines, III. 6 0 0 1 8 420

The Model 103K SOj analyzer kit measures the sulfur dioxide concentration in flue gases. The measurable range of the detector tube is 0.02 to 0.3% by volume or 200-3000 ppm. The time required for sampling and reading is 5 minutes. Headings are not affected by the presence of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, nitric oxide, nitrogen, or oxygen. Fume H o o d s

An induced-air, Fiberglas laboratory fume hood has both the exhaust motor and blower and the auxiliary motor and blower mounted in the top of the hood. The auxiliary blower pulls 60% of the air needed to purge the hood from outside the laboratory. This air is mixed with undesired fumes and 40% room air and then purged by the exhaust blower to the atmosphere. Labconco Corp., 8811 Prospect, Kansas City, Mo. 64132 424

Lasers

The Model K-L Laserette is a portable ruby laser that emits at 6943 Â using ruby and at 10,600 A using glass. No cooling is required. The Laserette has a typical output of 1.0 J with a 150-200 microsecond pulsewidth. Beam angle (half-angle, half-power) is 4 milliradians with ruby, 3 milliradians with glass. Rod size is 0.25 inch X 3 inches. The Model KY-18 is an yttriumaluminum-garnet (YAG) laser with a repetition rate of up to 50 pulses/second. The neodymium-doped device emits at 1.06 microns in the infrared with a peak power of 10 megawatts and a pulsewidth of less than 10 nanoseconds. Its energy output is 100 m j / pulse. The KY-18 uses a 5 mm X 50 mm coreless YAG rod. Korad Corp., 2520 Colorado Ave., Santa Monica, Calif. 90406 421 G a s Elution A n a l y z e r

The Model 850 gas elution analyzer features modular design with plug-in power supply and bridge circuits. The instrument operates over the ambient temperature range 50° - 100° F and uses a high-sensitivity thermal conductivity detector. Up to four components can be measured. A sample flow of from 100-500 ml/minute is required. Teledyne Analytical Instruments, 370 S. Fair Oaks Ave., Pasadena, Calif. 422

P r e c o a t e d T L C Sheet

Chromagram Sheet 6062, a precoated alumina sheet with fluorescent indicator, consists of an inert polyester base with a uniform coating of highly active alumina. The sheets measure 20 X 20 cm but can be cut to desired size. Distillation Products Industries, Rochester, Ν. Υ. 14603 425

Rapid response halogen leak detector detects leaks in high vacuum sys tems. The instrument operates on the principle that the presence of halogen-containing molecules on a hot platinum surface immediately in creases the ion emission of the plati num. The ion current is measured and displayed on an indicating meter in the Model HL-2 or used to operate an audio alarm in the Model HS-1. The leak detector is effective over the pressure range 760 to 10~ 6 torr. Bendix Vacuum Division, 1645 St. Paul St., Rochester, Ν. Υ. 426
