News Chakrabarti Wins Fisher Scientific Lecture Award
Alfred O.C. Nier, professor emeritus of physics at the University of Minnesota and a pioneer in the field of mass spectrometry, celebrated his 70th birthday on May 26 at a symposium given in his honor by the American Society for Mass Spectrometry (ASMS) at the 29th Annual Conference on Mass Spectrometry and Allied Topics. Burnaby Munson, professor of chemistry at the University of Delaware and president of the ASMS, and Lura J. Powell, research chemist at the National Bureau of Standards, presented Nier with a birthday cake while 250 international scientists serenaded him with strains of "Happy Birthday"

Chakrabarti, professor of chemistry at Carleton University, was presented with the Fisher Scientific Lecture Award at the 64th Chemical Conference and Exhibition of the Chemical Institute of Canada, held from May 31-June 3 in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
