Study of Ion Exchange Processes for Nioblum and Tantalum.

Preliminary flow sheet developed for production of oxides, based on literature search. Cost estimates for fixed bed about the same as for solvent extraction; somewhat lower for continuous contactors. Research and development program needed to confirm optimistic assumptions and several probable advantages other than cost.

I t is shown that fog formation is related to Lewis number, and results of a rigorous, point by point calculation are appreciably different from those obtained when simplifying assumptions are made. Sample calculations are given. The Design of Cooler-Condensers with Fog Formation.

Availability of pure sulfur would make one-step manufacture of HzS04 possible in a pressure reactor at about 300’ C. and 400 p.s.i. oxygen partial pressure. Fast reaction bypasses conventional burning of sulfur to SOz, the catalytic step to SOa, and final absorption of the gases. Rate affected by some foreign ions. Thermodynamics of Ternary, Liquid-Supercrltical Gas Systems with Applications for High-pressure Vapor Extraction. A good

semiqualitative picture of the phase behavior of ternary systems can be obtained from thermodynamic considerations and limited binary data. Criteria have been developed for choosing a suitable supercritical gas for efficient separation.

The Effect of Mass Transfer on the Stability of Miscible Displacement Fronts in Porous Media. Stability analysis shows

that mass transfer, like dispersion, can exert a stabilizing effect on miscible displacement fronts. A method for determining initial response of system variables to a perturbation in axial velocity is illustrated.

Factors Affecting Polymer Degradation by Sonic Irradiation.

Sonic irradiation studies have shown a direct relationship, independent of polymer chemical type, between shear lability of polyisobutylene and poly (n-octyl) methacrylate solutions and their viscosity-temperature improver power in oil blends. Loss of viscosity-temperature improver power varied directly with this polymer property.
