Isothermal oscillatory behavior may be modeled in a system of only two independent chemical species by involving cubic autocatalysis with catalyst decay: A 2B 3B, rate = k i d 2 ; B C, rate = k26. In an open system this scheme also leads to exotic patterns of multiple stationary states. Cubic autocatalysismay be replaced by pairs of consecutive,second-order reactions. This may be accomplished in several ways, but a third variable is inevitably introduced. We study a trio of schemes: I: A + B F= X (3,-3); B + X 3B (4). 11: 2B * X (3,-3); A + X 3B (4). 111: 2B + X (3,-3); A + X B X (4).
