Libraries are the repositories of a tremendous wealth of information from the past and present, which is essential to the pursuit of research. The quality and breadth of the library collection are often taken for granted. However, continuous effort on the part of both the scholar and the librarian is required to ensure the preservation of material essential to further research. Recently, a problem has been called to my attention regarding the availability of the “A” pages in past issues of ANALYTICALCHEMISTRY in a few libraries abroad, The great success of our JOURNAL over the years is attributable to the combination of a magazine and a research journal in each issue. The magazine section includes outstanding invited articles on the progress of various aspects of analysis and instrumentation. Currently, we provide articles by experts in a number of feature sections including A/C INTERFACE, THE ANALYTICAL APPROACH, FOCUS, INSTRUMENTATION, and REPORT. Interspersed with these articles are pertinent news items and advertisements on the latest instrumentation and supplies available. The composite is an excellent source of information for the practicing chemist. Most librarians arrange to have the complete issues of our JOURNAL bound for preservation. Unfortunately, there appear to be a few who, in the misguided interest of cutting costs and saving space, have only the research papers bound for their users-often without their knowledge. Although this practice occurs in only a small number of libraries, analytical chemists should make sure that it does not occur in theirs. As a rough experiment, I calculated the extra cost of binding the complete issue of ANALYTICALCHEMISTRYat the Cornel1 Science Library. The cost of including the “A” pages with the research papers adds only $7 to $10 a year, and only five extra feet of shelf space were required for a total period of 20 years. The preservation of this and other important sources of published information is vital for future generations of scientists and is well worth the small cost and space involved. Libraries are institutions charged by society with the responsibility of being the custodians of information, not the editors of it.
