Biopolymer Models of Nucleic Acids
The varieties of molecular models have heen reviewed adeouatelv. .(1.2). . . With reference to oreanic structures thev can be classified as the skeletal or framework type represented by FMM (3)and Drieding models (4),and the space-filling type represented by CPK (5). In recent years combinations of skeletal and space-filling features have heen proposed (6). Although both types have been used successfully to visualize stereochemistry in small and moderate size molecules very little progress has been made in adapting their best features to the construction of macromolecules such as the biopolymeric polynucleotides and polypeptides. There are many reasons for this lack of progress. Macromolecular models imoose reouirements associated with size. weieht. and cost that have n o t been addressed adequate
