apparatw review This month's column offer* for your consideration two widelv different tvpcs of apparatus. The first is from a "traditional" source and the second is from a unique source. Perhaps hoth will be interesting to you.

Semiflexible Molecular Models Supplier: Price:

Tacoma Products. Inc. 181 S. Thomas Rd. Tallmadge, OH 44278 $12.48/boxed set (includes educational discount).

The models are available either in bulk or in a boxed kit. The kit consist of a variety of colored tubes and connectors. The connectors, which lwk like a pair of interflocking C's, are the key to this unique set of models. They allow for rotation of the connected pieces and great flexibility in the models themselves. In addition to these unique connectors, five additional components are provided: a "nonrolling ball," a n sp3 member, an s p 2 member, a double bond, and a triple bonded carbon pair. The components are colored to represent carbon, oxygen, i n d nitrogen as well as other common second row elements. Enough components are supplied to make at least one million varieties of models. Suggesled Uses . . These model are intended to bring the user's five senses to bear on the concepts involved in structural organic chemistry. T o wit: What is a methyl group? An alkyl group? How do primary, secondary, and tertiary carbons differ? Students can make models of the usual organic com~ounds encountered, but, more importantly, they can move, rotate, and "play" with these models to get a "feel" for the structures pictured in their texts. Students can use the models to investigate the progress of a reaction by building the reactants and rearranging the molecules stepwise as the reaction proceeds.

By useof a colored tetrahedra, a particular orbital may be followed durine the course of an electrocvclic reaction. The model may be &ed to help in studies of f;agments obtained from spectroscopy, aromatic hydrocarbons, Bredt's Rule, strained and unstrained compounds, chair and boat forms of compounds as well as space-filling models by the addition of Styrofoam balls. In summary, these are probably the best organic models that my students or I have used. DAVIDBYRUM 960 Linda Vista Globe. AZ 85501

The following is the most unique review that I have received to date.

Before using a beaker, run your finger along your face and then along the pouring lip of the beaker to he used. The oils deposited will allow you to pour uniformly from the beaker spout and will make the procedure as dripless as possible. HYMANI. FEINSTEIN 1041 1 Forest Avenue Fairtax, VA 22030
