special technic of German trade. For a full use in this country the book would have to be supplemented with material that would apply more specifically to the fabrics and dyes that are employed here. The tests for determining the nature of the coloring matters This book is well written. It is a n exceedingly interesting and valuable book for those connected with the paint, varnish, used in the production of the dyed colors are probably of more linoleum, and printing ink industries. It is very clear and goes interest t o American practice than the fastness tests. Several important new forms of testing are included, such as the paraffin into the chemistry of drying oils rather more completely than any previous work. The chapter on Boiled, Blown and Stand test for fast colors on cotton, particularly as employed in conOil is of great value t o the paint chemist. The chapters on junction with the hydrosulfite test. There is also a section on the testing for the naphthol A-S dyes, which is an important Bleaching and Drying contain information which is up to date. This book should be in the library of every paint, varnish, addition t o our knowledge on this subject. The tests for the vat colors are also thoroughly discussed and are of the utmost linoleum, and printing ink manufacturer, as it contains most importance to cotton dyers. In fact, this volume may be said excellent data. It has two indexes, one for subjects and one for names, which t o deal almost entirely with cotton colors, for although there are a few pages devoted to the testing of dyes on animal fibers, this is an additional convenience. MAXIR~ILIAN TOCH subject is taken up in a very brief and cursory manner. Plenty of examples and a good index are given, and the book is well worth the attention of all cotton dyers. Pyroxylin Enamels and Lacquers. BY SAMUELP. WILSON. J. M. MATTHGWS 213 pages. D. Van Nostrand Co., New York, 1925. Price, $3.00. This handbook is the first authoritative exposition of the new industry and is written with refreshing candor. Its style is admirably simple and it contains no more than the usual quota of first-edition typographical errors. The whole work is intensely practical in aspect. I n fact, the absence of an adequate discussion of the physico-chemical principles underlying the selection of solvents on the basis of their rates of evaporation, their chemical structure, and their properties in constant boiling mixtures is to be regretted. Further, it is felt that the brief discussion on page 55 of the formulation problems encountered in blending solvent and nonsolvent to secure compatibility and t o prevent cotton blush and gum blush is too brief and obscure to be very helpful to the novice. Part I , dealing with Raw Materials, is distinctly the weaker of the two parts. This is particularly noticeable in the chapter on Solvents, where errors of fact have crept in. The.yield of butanol by fermentation as given by the author is about 200 per cent of the theoretical. Contrary t o his opinion, the use of molasses as a raw material in this process will not reduce butanol to a price comparable with ethyl alcohol, as can readily be seen if the available carbohydrate in corn and molasses is considered. Many will disagree with the classification of camphor and diethyl phthalate as solvents rather than as temporary plasticizers. Cyclohexanol is listed as a solvent and its peculiar blending power for mixtures of true solvents with nonsolvents is not mentioned. Chapter VII, on Pigments, is particularly meritorious. Part I1 covers, fairly completely, all the operations necessary in the manufacture of lacquer. The different types of presentday lacquer are defined by their properties and uses, and numerous Formulas are given. The author has a habit, that will probably distress many who attempt t o follow his formulas, of stating gum content, not as solid material, but as a “solution.” “Ester gum solution” is frequently mentioned, whereas on page 83 ester gum is stated to be used in “proportions of 6, 8, and 10 pounds per gallon,” several different solvent mixtures being mentioned. Similar comments might be made concerning the use of such terms as “shellac in butanol” and “Elemi solution.” Kauri gum unfortunately is not used in any of the typical formulas. Analytical methods for lacquer have not kept pace with production and this is reflected in Chapter XII. BRUCEK. BROWN

This is a nicely arranged book dealing with the testing of colors on dyed fabrics, both for the purpose of determining the qualities of fastness and for identifying the class of the dyestuffs employed. With the customary German methodical mind in developing a treatise in any field, a history of the entire subject is first given, after which the authors proceed to a systematic investigation of the matters in hand. Clear and concise descriptions are given of the latest and most improved methods of testing the various qualities of fastness of the colors as dyed on different kinds of fabric materials. These methods include a great deal of work that has been developed subsequent to the war, so this volume may be said to give perhaps the latest knowledge on this subject. It must he borne in mind, however, that the methods and materials have a distinct reference to the
