meters. Chapter 6, on FT-IR spectrom etry, includes modern data-handling methods. The chapter on quantitative analysis is directed primarily to singlecomponent analysis, whereas the sec tions on multicomponent analysis are restricted to Κ and Ρ matrix and curve fitting, omitting partial least-squares and principal component regression analysis. Two of the most useful chap ters are on simple sampling (a topic all too often overlooked) and preparation of polymer samples. The remainder of the book covers specialized topics such as reflection spectroscopy, microsampling, matrix isolation, GC/IR, surface methods, and emission spectrometry. Two chapters are devoted to Raman spectrometry, and the final chapter presents the the ory of IR spectrometry. The authors who contributed to this text are wellrespected and well-known spectrosco pies. The references are fairly compre hensive; a few are as recent as 1986, although the bulk of them are from 1982 or earlier. The book does not address current IR and Raman technology very well, but it does offer valuable fundamental information. The organization is good, and many important points concerning sampling are discussed.

Introduction to Microwave Sample Preparation: Theory and Practice

N

ew microwave techniques are making sample preparation procedures faster, more convenient, and more controlled. This revolutionary new book gives you what you need to know to get started ... the his tory of the technique, the relevant methodo logical details, the all-important safety precau tions, and a number of specific applications. Eleven chapters describe equipment and techniques that have been found most effec tive. They offer direct practical applications of the methods to a variety of sample types, in cluding microwave digestion of botanical, bio logical, and food samples; selenium analysis; Kjeldahl nitrogen determination; remote oper ation of microwave systems; and more. As a unique feature, this book presents a funda mental thermodynamic equation relating acid (sample) size, final temperature, heat capacity, and transformations of the basic equation predicting time and temperature for digestion. A truly multi-disciplinary volume, this book can be used in inorganic elemental analysis, sample digestion, food analysis, environmental sample preparation chemistry, and other areas. H.M.
