Selective Service. Over 50,000 men h a v e been inducted into t h e armed forces since t h e start of the conflict in Korea. T h e a r m e d services have requested the Selective Service System t o supply an additional 160,000 men for the last three m o n t h s of this year. Military Reserve Policy. Enlisted members of t h e Army, Navy, and Marine Corps Reserves w h o h a v e four or more d e p e n d e n t s may request release from active duty. N o reserves with this many d e p e n d e n t s will b e recalled for active d u t y . These provisions d o not apply to Army personnel o n active duty overseas. I n another notice t h e Marine Corps announced its plan t o give volunteer reserve officers advance notice of mobilization calls. Defense Production. T h e status and scope of t h e p r o g r a m being organized u n d e r the Defense Production Act and its impact on industry w a s scheduled for discussion at a U . S. C h a m b e r of Commerce meeting in W a s h i n g t o n Oct. 27. Specific items o n t h e a g e n d a included problems relating to production for rearmament and industry's capacity to meet expanded military requirements, as well as supplying essential civilian needs. Fuel and Power Survey. A Senate committee is expected to hold hearings t o obtain information o n which to formulate a national fuel policy. This would apply to all fuel and energy resources except atomic energy. A t t h e same time information will b e sought as to available domestic fuel reserves, present and future consumption, and m e t h o d s of encouraging development. Bureau of Standards. A summary of scientific investigation carried out b y t h e National Bureau of Standards during t h e past year was published recently. Copies are available from the Government Printing Office a t 75 cents each. Educational Exchange. T h e State D e partment has scheduled a series of meetings with private groups to get their ideas on increasing t h e effectiveness of t h e department's overseas information a n d educational exchange program. N e w Chemical C o d e . "A Method of Coding Chemicals for Correlation a n d Classification" h a s b e e n issued by t h e N a tional Research Council's Chemical-Biological Coordination C e n t e r ( s e e "Potomac Postscripts," May 2 2 ) . T h e 9 8 - p a g e booklet outlines a p u n c h c a r d system for t h e correlation of chemical structure w i t h biological action. Rules a n d directions for coding organic a n d inorganic compounds, description and use of t h e p u n c h cards, a n d about 200 specific examples a r e also explained.
