BRONWILL CONSTANT TEMPERATURE CIRCULATOR

NEW BOOKS

There are eight chapters in the book. They deal with the solidification proc ess, molten zone refining, practical con siderations, choice and design of equip ment, examples of equipment, manipu lation of high purity materials, the chemical and physical examination of high purity material, and properties and applications of high purity ma terials.

ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY

This book is an English translation of one published originally in Russian by the Moscow University Press. The first section reviews the development of refractometry as a special discipline. Material is arranged in chronological order with atomic, molar, bond, and ionic refractions considered separately and related to the type of bonding. Included are tabulations of refractometric data. The second section deals with appli cation of refractometry to structural chemistry. Included are hydrogen bonds, solutions, silicates, complexes, and organic compounds. Interatomic distances and characteristics of atomic interactions are set forth. The inter national bibliography contains 459 ref erences.

Reagent Chemicals. American Chem ical Society, xv + 564 pages. Ap plied Publications, American Chemi cal Society, 1155—16th St., N.W., Washington, D. C. 1961. $10. "Reagent Chemicals, American Chemical Society Specifications, 1960" is now available. Its use became offi cial as of March 1, 1961. This is the third edition of this valuable reference work. The first edition, which came out in 1950, was the result of approximately 25 years of work by the ACS Commit tee on Analytical Reagents. In the second edition, which appeared in 1955, emphasis was placed on revisions of existing specifications. The 1960 edition reflects the ad\ances made on the part of manufac turers in improving the quality of their chemicals, the new reagents now avail able, and the greatly improved methods and reagents. Some of tho new data included are: information on the neutrality of 5% solutions of 33 different salts (not pub lished elsewhere) ; conditions for deter mining small amounts of nitrate in 30

different .silts (brucine sulfate test in 28 salts and diphenylamine test in 8 salts); extraction techniques for deter mining small amounts of antimony, copper, iron, lead, nickel, rare earths, phosphate, arsenic, silicates; methods of isolating and determining chloride, bromide, and iodine when they occur as impurities in each other; flame photo metric methods for determining stron tium and calcium in barium salts—cal cium, sodium, potassium in magnesium salts—potassium, sodium, and stron tium in calcium salts—sodium in potas sium salts—potassium in sodium salts —calcium, potassium, and sodium in lithium salts; method for determining water with the Karl Fischer reagent in many organic solvents; first official specifications for spectrophotometric grade of organic solvents; and new test methods for determining small amounts of aldehydes in ether and in acetone. On the basis that the book will be used by less skilled analysts, details of procedures are given in many cases. A new section "The Gravimetric Deter mination of Small Amounts of Impuri ties" illustrates this point. In addition to citing composition and limits of purity of 234 reagent chemi cals, this edition contains an index and a 33-page introduction relating to definitions, procedure, and standards. Methods presented have been checked in at least 6 different laboratories. Most of them have been used for sev eral years. Based on the frequent number of re quests received at ACS headquarters prior to issuance of the 1960 edition for information regarding changes and improvements in reagent specifications, this reference book should meet a wide spread need for authoritative informa tion.

Gat Chromatography. Henry J. Noebels, R. F. Wall, and Nathaniel Brenner, Editors, xvi + 46S pages. Academic Press Inc., Ill Fifth Ave., New York 8, Ν. Υ. 1961. $16. This volume contains proceedings of the Second International Symposium on Gas Chromatography held at Michigan State University in 1959 under sponsor ship of the Instrument Society of America. Object of this sympoeium was to provide a means for exchanging in formation on technical advances of analysis instrumentation and to pro mote their application in industry. Tn addition to the 34 papers pre sented, there is a bibliography on gas chromatography and a subject and author index. Typical of the topics covered are
