though he plans to continue his research in factor analysis, he also plans to pursue interests outside the laboratory. Pirkle, professor of chemistry at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, will receive the Award for Achievements in Separation Science, sponsored by Waters. His research has focused on chiral solvating agents for NMR determination of enantiomeric purity, chiral stationary phases, enantiodiscrimination mechanisms chiral selectors and hollowfiber membrane devices. Summers, professor of chemistry at the University of Maryland-Baltimore County, will receive the Award for Achievements in Magnetic Resonance. Summers's research focuses on NMR studies of proteins and macromolecular interactions, with an emphasis on HIV.

HP acquires MTI Hewlett Packard's (HP) Chemical Analysis Group has acquired MTI Analytical Instrument (Fremont, CA) and plans, over the next two years, to integrate the operation into HP's Little Falls Analytical Division in Wilmington, DE. MTI was founded in 1981 and has pioneered the use of microelectromechanical systems technology for micromachined GCs. Combined with a laptop computer, the micro GC is well-suited for field measurements. Of Mil's 45 current employees, HP expects to retain 39.
