BUYER'S GUIDE
CONTROL Air cleaner. International Environmental Corp., introduces the QAS Series quality air system, a fourstage air purification system that combines UVC light with high-efficiency filtration. The unit includes a coarse particulate filter, a HEPA filter, a carbon filter, and a high-output UVC Emitter™ to kill most organisms in the airstream and on the adjacent filter surfaces. This UL-approved unit is offered for 500, 750, and 1000 cfm. 120
INFORMATION TOOLS Pollution prevention guides. SOLUTIONS Software Corporation has updated their "U.S. EPA Compliance Sector Guides on CD-ROM" to feature nine new industries including air transport, shipbuilding, textile, and metal casting. All guides are fully cross-indexed for rapid search and include pollution outputs, P2 opportunities, federal statutory and regulatory frameworks, compliance history, industrial process descriptions, and economic and geographic industry data. 121 Water treatment software. Ashland Chemical's Drew Industrial Division introduces DREWTRAX 6.0 data management software for water treatment programs. The userfriendly program features calculated variables, inventory tracking, comment fields, stacked run charts, and process capability calculations. 122
LABORATORY Elemental analysis. Leeman Labs, Inc., introduces the Direct Reading Echelle High Throughput Inductively
Coupled Plasma (DRE-HT ICP) system for elemental analysis. The DRE-HT ICP system is outfitted with a multichannel option that combines the high resolution and dispersion of echelle optics with high-gain detectors to provide sample throughput nearly twice as fast as ICPs using array-type detectors. 123 Gas chromatography. Hewlett-Packard's HP 6890 Series gas chromatograph using a HP-INNOWax 530-pm fused silica capillary column was found to analyze water content in organic solvents 4 to 7 times faster than the Porapak Q porous-polymer packed column method, while also improving peak shape, sensitivity, and precision. 124
MONITORING Chlorine sensor. GasTech, Inc., offers the STM2100 multigas monitor for chlorine detection. This portable device monitors for hydrocarbons, oxygen content, and, using interchangeable sensors, monitors up to two toxic gases including Cl2, CO, HCN, H2S, NO, N0 2 , NH3, or S0 2 . 125
probe protects the sensor from debris and velocity effects. The WL44 is programmable, records 6000 readings, and runs for 1 year on a 9-V dc battery. 127 Total organic carbon. HF Scientific, Inc., has released the Micro 200 TOC for real-time online monitoring of total organic carbon in water streams, using the persulfate UV oxidation method. The system features automatic calibration, automatic purge cleaning, and a continuous graphical display of the previous 8- or 24-hour period. 128
PREVENTION Sick building syndrome. Hill & Knowlton, Inc., introduces Ontario's Breathing Wall as an experimental biological air-cleaning solution to sick buildings. The Breathing Wall filtrates the air through an indoor ecosystem composed of rocks, plants, fish, and microorganisms. The system has been installed in several buildings in Ontario and is being examined by NASA for use on the international space station. 129
Continuous emissions. Rosemount Analytical has integrated the full capabilities of its NGA 2000 MLT Series Gas Analyzers into its GMP 1000M Continuous Emissions Monitoring (CEM) Package. This combines the NGA 2000 modular system of multichannel analyzers and communication network with the GMP lOOOM's capabilities to measure up to five components including 0 2 , CO, C0 2 , SO,, NO, NO , THC, and opacity. 126
PCE removal. Calgon Carbon Corp., announces that they will install North America's first full-scale UV/ peroxide system for drinking water treatment. Calgon's 360-kW Rayox Tower with 12 x 30-kW lamps will be operational this summer in Salt Lake City, Utah, to treat low levels of perchloroethylene (PCE) found in one of their public water wells. 130
Sewer and stormwater flow. Global Water has added an optional mouseshaped probe to their WL44 Water Level Logger for sewer and stormwater flow monitoring. The "mouse"
