BUYER'S GUIDE ANALYSIS Nitrogen/sulfur analyzers. Antek Instruments, Inc., offers the 9000 Series analyzers for performing total nitrogen and/or total sulfur analyses in as little as 30 s. Systems can be configured for nitrogen only, sulfur only, or simultaneous nitrogen/sulfur analyses in gas, liquid, or solid samples. The units feature a data-handling system with Windows-based software. Remote operation and real-time analysis support are available. 120
MEASUREMENT Fiberoptic probe refractometer. MISCO unveiled its line of digital fiberoptic refractometers (DFRs), which provide digital readouts on dipping the end of the device into a liquid solution and pressing a button. The compact, hand-held probe operates between 0 and 50 °C with automatic nonlinear temperature compensation. Each DFR features an easy-to-read liquid crystal display. Users may select up to five different scales selected from hundreds of options. 123
CONTROL Nanospheres. The Department of Energy's Sandia National Laboratories have created a broad range of selfassembling nanospheres, which can be configured to fit inside each other like Russian dolls. These durable silica spheres, which range in size from 2 to 50 nm, form in a few seconds. Some pore shapes trap materials, while others allow free flow in and out of the spheres. With characteristics superior to conventional fillers used in encapsulants for tools, they expand and contract with less stress. Furthermore, they may be useful as coatings on silicon chips, as they have 3. low dielectric constant and store little heat. 121
LABORATORY GC/MS training. SAVANT Audiovisual, Inc., introduces a GC/MS interactive computer-based training program titled Fundamentals of GC/MS. This program introduces principles of the combined techniques, including GC resolution optimization, column types, inlet systems for packed and capillary columns, enrichment techniques, interfaces, ionization modes, mass filters, data acquisition, and qualitative and quantitative analysis. 122
in Class I, Division 1 Groups B, C, and D hazardous locations, uses dual infrared technology for detecting hydrocarbon gases. Users are able to preselect hydrocarbon gases in either the 0-100% lower explosive limit or the 0-5000 parts per million ranges. 125 Indoor air quality. GrayWolf Sensing Solutions, LLC, introduces its DirectSense 100, an indoor air quality (IAQ) monitoring system that uses a handheld computer to measure carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, temperature, dew point, relative humidity, and ventilation rates. The unit displays minimum, maximum, and average values in large digital or tabular formats on. its tactile color screen. The unit features Microsoft Pocket Word, Pocket Excel and EPArecommended IAQ report templates and it can be left on site, logging at preset intervals with enough memory tO stoTP months of high-volume data 126
TREATMENT Temperature calibrator. TTI, Inc., offers the TC200 temperature calibrator for calibrating temperatures from -40 °C below ambient to 180 °C. The 2-in.-diameter, 6-in.-long insert allows multiple sensors to be calibrated at once, increasing efficiency. A large numeric keyboard offers programming of up to 20 calibration points, as well as ramp/soak times. An RS-232 interface is standard, allowing data to be exported to common Windows applications. 124
Soil remediation. Environmental Resources Management and CBA Environmental Services, Inc., offer the EPA-approved mobile injection treatment unit (MITU) process for on-site soil remediation. The MITU process is an efficient, short-term, portable method that treats organic and inorganic wastes in one step, using hot air, biochemicals, slurries, and stabilization compounds, as required. The unit can treat areas LIp to 30 ft deep, reducing costs by 40 to 60% compared with conventional technologies. 127
MONITORING Gas detector. GasTech, Inc., announces that its Fy\.-ii\. Transmitter Series is now UL-approved. The FXixv, wmen is suitauie for installation
