Air Pollution Removing indoor VOCs. SRE, Inc. introduces the CAP Clean Air Plant stand-alone indoor air cleaning system that removes volatile organic compounds, heavy metals, and gas odors from the workplace. The system draws in ambient air, removes particulates, and uses nonpathogenic microbes and enzymes to destroy contaminants and purify the air. There are no filters to replace. Analysis Drinking water test samples. AccuStandard has been accredited as a provider of proficiency test samples, designed as single-blind samples, according to guidelines from EPA, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and other federal and state agencies. The samples, which meet QA/QC requirements, are specially designed for drinking water analysis that covers numerous organic and inorganic parameters. Wastewater samples also are available. Jones Chromatography, Inc., announces its new Prospekt-2, a high-speed, solid-phase extraction (SPE) sample cleanup system. A fully automated design allows for keeping pace with the run times of LC and LC/MS systems without complex robotic automation and implementation. Direct introduction of the SPE eluates into LC/MS eliminates tedious manual cleanup steps, providing more accurate and reproducible results. spheric pressure ionization mass spectrometry detector, which incorporates the latest electronic and vacuum technology. Analyzing difficult elements. TJA Solutions has introduced the VG Axiom, a double-focusing, magnetic sector, ICP-MS spectrometer designed for impedance-free analysis for research and industrial applications at parts-per-trillion levels. Even "difficult" elements such as chlorine, phosphorus, silicon, and sulfur, which are inaccessible to quadrupole ICP-MS, can be analyzed. Varian, Inc., announces the addition of a new, high-efficiency 3-um diameter stationary phase to its line of OmniSpher C18 Universal Columns. These columns, which are universal reversed phase liquid chromatography columns for analyzing acidic, basic, neutral, and polar compounds, were introduced at Pittcon in March 2000. Compliance Compliance software. Integrated Process Resources now licenses LEADERS software, a fully paperless and integrated software system that enables refineries, chemical plants, and FE contractors to ensure compliance with all federal and state air quality regulations. Control Solvent splash risk prevention. Labconco Corp. offers its Rotary Evaporator, the only U.S.-made rotary evaporator. Its controls are on a softtouch keypad located high on the front for easy accessibility and to prevent risk of splash from solvent spills or the bath. Field Testing

Accurate on-site analysis. SensIR Technologies introduces the TravellR, a mobile FTIR system that accurately analyzes liquid and solid substances outside the laboratory. The system uses the imaging capability of video microscopy with a patented ATR element to analyze samples "miles from civilization", at hazardous spill and accident sites or crime scenes. Ionics Agar Environmental announces the LEAKWISE Model ID-223/2000 that continuously tests for and detects a hydrocarbon layer as thin as 0.3 mm or as thick as 25 mm on a water surface. Applications include testing for spillage from tank farms, wastewater discharge, pipelines, and plants that make edible oils. Groundwater also can be tested. Information Tools Wireless-to-Internet telemetry. Strison Wireless Systems announces its Cell-Alert CA-2000 Wireless Internet Telemetry Remote Transmitting Unit, which can send data packets via underused channels on existing cellular towers. Applications include remote monitoring for liquid and bulk solids level, power loss, and remote weather. The company processes data and e-mails reports and alarms. (Call John A. Disco Associates offers DataQuick, which provides two-way communication with the OCMII and OCMIII open-channel flowmeters from Milltronics. DataQuick provides remote programming, diagnostics, and data acquisition via phone, land lines, UHF, VHF, and spread-spectrum radio. Laboratory Testing ultrafiltration membranes. PCI Membrane Systems introduces its A5 Mini-Module to use with PCI's BRO pilot membrane filtration plant to test ultrafiltration membranes for applications in which a clear product is required. The module can fit almost any test unit with flow rates of 5-7.5 gal/min. Applications include water treatment and fruit juice clarification. Cambridge AccuSense, Inc., has introduced the AirGrid, a new, flexible tool for measuring air flow and air velocity in cleanrooms used to test HEPA filters. Multipoint measurement profiles laminar flow to detect dead spots, and up to eight data points can be stored per filter. The user can set up multiple cleanrooms, each with various zones and individual filters, with the printout showing room, zone, and filter data. Monitoring Flammable gas analyzer. Control Instruments Corp. is offering its Series 670 high-temperature, high-speed, direct-mount flammable gas and vapor analyzers. Special design allows devices to sample atmospheres that contain little or no oxygen. Applications include detecting high-flash point solvents. Reagent-free organics monitoring. Hach Co. announces the OptiQuant UV Organic Analyzer, which analyzes COD u v , BOD u v , and total organic compounds (TOC uv ). The analyzer requires no reagents, online sampling, or sample conditioning. Reagent-free nitrate analyzer. Hach C.. introduces its OptiQuant UV Nitrate Analyzer that monitors nitrate levels accurately with no need for reagents and very little need for maintenance. Nitrate is reported as nitrate (NOJ or as nitrate as nitrogen (NOxN). Monitoring applications include wastewater, drinking water, and agricultural runoff. The sensor also can monitor for up to four additional toxic and combustible gases. It has low sensitivity to humidity and temperature changes and is less sensitive to nitrogen concentration. Gas Tech, Inc., introduces its new GT Soil Vapor Monitor, which detects hydrocarbon (HC) vapors as total HC (including methane) or non-methane HC. Calibrated with hexane, the monitor detects HC vapors at 0-1000 ppm, in 10-ppm steps. It can run on "D"-sized NiCd or alkaline batteries, has microprocessor electronics, and is protected from dust and other contaminants. MSA is offering its FiveStar Alarm, a rugged, easy-to-use system that reliably detects and gives alarms about the presence of nine gases (five detectors can be loaded in the device at a time). Submersible level transducer. KPSI Transducers of Pressure Systems, Inc., announces a line of Series 700T alltitanium submersible level transducers, designed for extremely harsh environments. Applications include well monitoring, tank level, landfills, and reservoirs. Transducers can be used in marine, saltwater, and brackish water conditions. GrayWolf introduces the DirectSense IAQ PALM for monitoring indoor air quality and measuring and computer-documenting C0 2 , CO, temperature, relative humidity, and dewpoint. Control Instruments' hydrogen sulfide sensor uses electrochemical technology to monitor hydrogen sulfide in the parts-per-million range. Sensors require only 100 ppm of oxygen for their operation. Prevention

Waste oil evacuation. Lexair, Inc. announces its Tube-O-Matic valve, which is ideal for waste oil evacuation applications. The Tube-O-Matic's tube does not collapse entirely as tubing does in a pinch valve. Tubes are made in sizes to handle up to 1,100 gal/min at maximum working pressures of 250 lb/ in.2, pilot-operated (150 lb/in. 2 , solenoid-operated) at 20—375 °F. Inc., introduces its Mercury Recycling/Recovery Case, which holds mercury from sources including broken thermometers, batteries, and relays for recycling and prevents the mercury from contaminating the environment. Smoke and odor abatement. United Air Specialists, Inc., is offering its SMOG-HOG Kitchen Emission Control Systems that removes grease and smoke emissions and odors from kitchen emissions. Safety Palletized drum storage. HazStor is offering Haz-Rak, designed for indoor or outdoor storage of hazardous and regulated materials. It accommodates two to eight palletized 55-gal drums per storage level with maximum capacity of 64 drums. Spill sump capacity is 150—1,200 gal, which exceeds most stringent environmental regulations. Nalge Nunc International, Inc., offers its NALGENE VERSI-DRY Lab Soakers for laboratory spill containment. Standard Soakers can absorb up to 750 mL/m 2 of liquid; the Super Absorbent Lab Soaker absorbs up to 1500 mL/m 2 . Soakers have chemical-resistant backing that also grips surfaces and equipment. Asylum Research, Inc., announces its Q-control module, a hardware add-on for Nanoscope atomic force microscopes (AFM) from Digital Instruments. Treatment Water and metal recycling. Lewis Environmental Services, Inc., introduces the ENVIRO-CLEAN PROCESS to filter metallic wastewater and electrolytically recover metals such as chromium, lead, nickel, mercury, silver, and cadmium. The system can treat streams from 5 to 1000 gal/ min. The water is then recycled for further plant use, and metals products can be resold. Genera Technologies' Filta-Max, approved by EPA as equivalent to Method 1623, uses a novel filtration and recovery procedure to collect Cryptosporidium and Giardia.
