C&EN CHARTS Business continued to advance during May. Many important measures of economic activity were starting to move to new highs. According to the Department of Commerce, it now appears that gross national product will show a large advance in the second quarter of this year, following the exceptionally large increase in the first quarter. The increase in GNP in the first quarter of this year was $14 billion compared with an increase of $6.2 billion in the last quarter of 1964 and $9.8 billion in the first quarter. Industrial production, personal income, nonfarm employment all moved higher in May. The unemployment rate declined to its lowest point in more than seven and a half years. Spending for new plant and equipment is providing an important stimulus to the rise in total output and sales. Chemical companies' spending on new plant and equipment in the second quarter of this year will be at a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $2.4 billion; spending in the second half of this year will be at a rate of $2.5 billion. Capital outlays, according to the most recent survey of business investment intentions, are expected to increase throughout the year. For the full year, they will advance 12.5% over 1964.

Manufacturers' shipments showed little change from April to May. New orders declined by 2 % after adjustment for seasonal variation. The backlog of unfilled orders rose slightly to an end-of-May level of $59.9 billion, seasonally adjusted. Shipments of durable goods in May totaled $20.6 billion (seasonally adjusted), a drop of 2% from April. The decline was due mainly to a drop in shipments of primary and fabricated metals, according to Commerce's Bureau of the Census. Seasonal increases were reported by the automobile and aircraft industries; other major industry groups showed only minor changes (the chemical industry increased its shipments from $3,009 billion in April to $3,035 billion in May—an increase of only 0.86%). Industrial production continued to increase in May, although as in April, expansion was less rapid than in the first quarter of the year. The Federal Reserve Board's index of industrial production rose in May to 141.3% of the 1957-59 average from 140.8% in April. The increase reflected mainly continued expansion in output of machinery and other business equipment. Production of consumer goods increased slightly but remained below the March high.

1.9 Other uses — As an intermediate for chemical synthesis. Its insolubility in water and its solubility in organic liquids suggest its use as an oil-soluble rust inhibitor or as an ingredient in cutting oils, hydraulic fluids, specialty lubricants and similar application to block corrosive activity of acids produced by oxidation.
