EPR will never be the same Varian introduces E-Line —the ultimate in EPR instrument design. Modular. Solid-state. Expandable. Increased perform ance. Increased versatility. Increased compatibility. Greater choice. Here's how : (1 ) A radically new microwave bridge with a wider dynamic range and better AFC lock than any other. Easier to use than any other. Various options make it more flexible than any other. New detector gives better operation at audio modulation frequencies. (2) Compact control console contains new digital field controller, system function selector, oscilloscope, and modulation units allowing selection of 5 different modulation frequencies. (Magnet system choice: 4-, 6-, 9-, 12-or 15-inch.)

With the unique high-power and low-power ENDOR and ELDOR Systems, entirely new areas of investigation are opened up. (4) New Ε-Line epitomizes Varian's "living instrument" design philosophy. Systems operation can be continually upgraded with the addition of new modules, 10 different cavities, and an unparalleled line of accessories. With the Ε-Line, EPR takes a quantum jump. EPR will never be the same. For brochure, write Varian, Analytical Instrument Division, Palo Alto, California 94303.

(3) Capability of interfacing to computer systems and of conversion to a brand new Wide-Line NMR and NQR System.

Watchdog for effluents The CSM® 6 is a Technicon® AutoAnalyzer® system that monitors effluents on-site around the clock. It measures such nutrients as Ammonia, Nitrate and Nitrite, Nitrite, Orthophosphate, and Total Inorganic Phosphate, as well as the following parameters: Acidity/Alkalinity, Hardness, Phenols, Silica, Copper, Fluoride, Total Iron, Chromium, and Chloride. That's a total right now of 14 tests, from which you can choose the six that meet your needs, with more parameters available soon. Both the Monitor and the alternative Laboratory Model print out a permanent written record, and all the data produced by the CSM 6 can be available for computer evaluation and statistical analysis. A series of CSM 6 systems can be used as an early warning system for accidental discharges. We have more information and technical papers that explain how our systems have worked in Los Angeles, Chicago, MinneapolisSt. Paul and other waste treatment plants, in communities both large and small, for both government and industry. Please write to sjjj Technicon Corporation, Department 86, Tarrytown, New York 10591, and we will send them to you.

The Instrument of the month. The Varian Techtron AA-120. The finest medium priced atomic absorption/flame emission spectrophotometer ever to excite an atom. For chemists who simply want the best possible performance for their money. The AA-120. Built to handle trace, major constituent and quantitative analyses for 68 different elements. For applications in metallurgy, mining, agriculture, geochemistry, pharmaceuticals, biomedical/

clinical, petroleum, pollution or industrial products. Designed with internal modularity, the AA-120 is very compact, extremely sensitive and refreshingly easy to operate and install. Naturally, we'd like you to see and test the Varian Techtron AA-120 soon. For more details or a demonstration, contact Varian Techtron, Walnut Creek, California 94598;NEVAAzabudaiBldg., Tokyo, Japan; Malton, Ontario, Canada; Crows Nest N.S.W., Australia; orZug, Switzerland. Meantime, in the interest of atomic absorption and flame emission spectroscopy, we present (on the following pages) a pictorial elaboration of the AA-120 and its accessories as demonstrated by our lab mate.

a. Before beginning the day's analyses, lab mate Nanci Hersh discusses some instrumental conditions with lab boss George Thomas. b. Next, she inserts a Varian Techtron hollow cathode lamp into the specially designed turret which allows operation of up to four lamps for multi-element repetitive analyses. c. Here, she's adjusting the current to the hollow cathode lamp. d. Prior to the actual sample run, Nanci aspirates a "standard" solution into the burner, and adjusts the grooved titanium burner head controls for vertical, horizontal, and rotational positioning. e. For automatically resetting the baseline of the instrument, Nanci uses the Auto 100 control while aspirating a blank solution. f. During analysis, Miss Hersh decides to make a small electronic adjustment of the DI-30 Digital Indicator which allows her to read out her results directly in concentration units. If necessary, she can also straighten out her working curve by using the DC-31 Digital Corrector located just below the digital indicator. g. The analysis completed, our lab mate reads the results on a tape fed to her by a third Varian Techtron digital accessory, the DP-32 Digital Printer.

Lab Laughs The Varian Techtron Lab Manual defines state-of-the-art as the best there is until something better comes along; or, here's where we were when the R&D money ran out. First Chemist: Do you believe marriage is a lottery? Second Chemist: No. In a lottery a man is supposed to have a chance. Then there was the wishy-washy protester who was afraid to burn his draft card—so he boiled it. Lest We Forget Dept. - I n 1938, the State of Wyoming produced one-third of an edible dry bean for every man, woman and child in the United States. Spectrophotometer is just another 17-letterword.

There's a new rock group in Boston called the Blue Genes. She was only a life scientist's daughter—but nobody ever questioned her structure. The president of the University of Texas: "We're working to develop a university our football team can be proud of." This traveling Varian salesman was stuck in a small town and went to the only available farm house for a place to sleep. "Can you put me up for the night?" he asked the farmer. "Reckon I can," he answered, "if you don't mind sharing a room with my young son." "My God!" said the salesman, "I'm in the wrong joke!" Send your favorite lab joke or cartoon on a postcard to Varian Techtron Lab Joke Editor, Varian Techtron, Walnut Creek, California 94598. $ 10 will be paid to the contributors whose cards are selected. Sorry, jokes and cartoons cannot be returned.
