Call for nominations for Noms award The ACS Northeastern Section is solic iting nominations for the 1992 James Flack Norris Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Teaching of Chem istry. Presented annually, the award consists of a certificate and an honorar ium of $3000. Nominees must have served with special distinction as teachers of chemistry at any level: sec ondary school, college, or graduate school. This must be attested by broad evidence of their students' subsequent careers in chemistry and/or other evi dence of wide-ranging effects on the teaching of chemistry. Nominating material must be limited to 30 pages and focus specifically on the nominee's contributions to and ef fectiveness in teaching chemistry. This should include a thorough curriculum vitae with listings of honors, awards, and such publications as relate to edu

Born in Hong Kong, the award win ner received a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Japan's Nagoya Uni versity in 1947. Following two years of postgraduate work with Louis Fieser at Harvard University, he returned to Nagoya University, where he complet ed a Ph.D. in 1954. He stayed on as a professor until 1958, and then became a professor of chemistry at Tokyo Kyoiku University. In 1963, he was ap pointed professor at Sendai's Tohoku University, and remained there until 1980, when he immigrated to the U.S. to assume his present position. Nakanishi has published some 550 papers and authored, coauthored, or edited eight books in such far-reaching fields of research as isolation, structur al, and bioorganic studies of bioactive compounds; retinal proteins; interac tion between bioactive compounds and receptors; circular dichroic spectrosco py; and structural studies of oligosac charides. He has been the recipient of many international awards, including, earlier in his career, the Chemical Society of Japan's Award in Pure Chemistry. More recently, he won the 1989 Nation al Institutes of Health Merit Award, the 1990 ACS Arthur C. Cope Award, and the 1990 Imperial Prize of the Japan Academy. Q
