News than 25% of its operating budget from national or state governments. Twoyear community colleges sponsored by political subdivisions of a state are not bound by these requirements. Previous awardees are ineligible for a threeyear period following their award. Any interested faculty member may participate by requesting an application form. The forms can be obtained from Richard Obrycki, Koppers Co., Inc., 440 College Park Dr., Monroeville, Pa. 15146. Deadline for return of application forms and proposals is April 1,1985.

Overseas Air Service Delivery of ACS Journals Beginning with the first issues of 1985, the American Chemical Society will use an air distribution service for all foreign journal subscriptions (except Chemical & Engineering News) to countries outside the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. The journals will be transported via air cargo to Amsterdam where they will continue by surface mail to European subscribers and by air to other parts of the world. The cost of this new service will be automatically included in all foreign subscription rates, and delivery time is expected to be improved by at least eight weeks. It should be noted that since air service will begin with the first issues of 1985, subscribers may well receive these issues before the year-end 1984 issues currently being shipped via surface mail.

Surface Science Center The University of Pittsburgh recently dedicated a $3-million center, within its department of chemistry, for research in surface science. The 8000-square-foot center incorporates several surface research groups. It contains experimental apparatus for studies of surface phenomena at the atomic or molecular level. Modern surface analytical techniques are coupled with methods of chemical physics to study technological surfaces (heterogeneous catalysts, metals, organic films) and model surfaces (single-crystal metals and semiconductors, metal clusters). Particular emphasis is placed on the study of the behavior of organic species on surfaces. Approximately 35 postgraduate associates, research faculty, and graduate students are currently engaged in research at the center. Financial support for this work comes from federal grants as well as from industrial sponsors.

Call for Papers A. J. P. Martin Honorary Symposium Urbino, Italy. May 27-31. Invited plenary lectures and contributed poster presentations are planned in all fields of chromatographic science including coupling of various techniques, such as GC/MS, HPLC/MS, and G C / F T IR. Authors wishing to present research papers in poster sessions should send a one-page 300-word abstract no later than Feb. 15 to Fabrizio Bruner, Istituto di Scienze Chimiche, Universita di Urbino, Piazza Rinascimento, 6,61029 Urbino, Italy. Authors will be notified of acceptance by March 15. 27th Rocky Mountain Conference Denver, Colo. July 14-18. General papers and poster sessions in all areas of chemistry are planned along with the following specific symposia: atomic spectrometry; atmospheric chemistry; chromatography; electrochemistry; environmental; EPR; ICP/MS; IR and luminescence spectroscopy; ion chromatography; mass spectrometry; and nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry. Abstracts of no more than 200 words must be submitted on a Rocky Mountain Conference or standard ACS abstract form before March 1. To obtain the forms and for additional information contact F.E. Lichte, U.S. Geological Survey, Box 25046, MS 928, DFC, Denver, Colo. 80225, 303-236-1941. Flow Analysis III Birmingham, England. Sept. 5-8. Current research on all aspects of continuous flow analysis will be covered including instrumentation for flow injection analysis and for continuous segmented and unsegmented flow analysis and approaches to total automation; detector and hybrid systems; theory of flow analysis; and applications in industrial, environmental, and clinical analysis. Abstracts should be submitted before April 15, along with the authors' indication of preference for lecture or poster presentation, to A.M.G. Macdonald, Department of Chemistry, The University, P.O. Box 363, Birmingham B15 2TT, U.K. Authors will be notified of decision by May 20. 12th Annual Meeting of the Federation of Analytical Chemistry and Spectroscopy Societies Philadelphia, Pa.
