COH (3, 3, 5, 5,-tetrakis(hydroxy2

methyl)-4-hydroxy-tetrahyS CH 2 0H dropyran) —is a cyclic polyol produced by the aldol condensation of acetone and formaldehyde. It c o n t a i n s f o u r 3H2 H2« primary and one secondary hydroxyl groups. Celanese has been producing this chemical in experimental quantities for some time. We now offer AEH commercially for your evaluation.

Chemical properties: The chemical reactivity of AEH is similar to other polyhydric alcohols containing primary and secondary hydroxyl groups. AEH, however, has a unique molecular configuration. Thus, it could be expected to produce different, unusual, and, occasionally, unexpected properties depending upon the application. Hydroxyl availability is determined by the coreactant. With aliphatic mono- and di-acids and isophthalic acid all five hydroxyl groups are readily available. With phthalic anhydride and rosin there appears to be some steric hindrance and somewhat less than five hydroxyl groups are available. Suggested applications: Celanese AEH holds promise of product improvement in a number of applications. As an example, there are indications that AEH based polyether rigid urethane foams excel in compressive strength and resistance to heat distortion.

Other potentially profitable areas of development include: Water soluble alkyds Water emulsifiable alkyds Surface active agents Foundry resins

Rosin esters Textile treating resins Synthetic drying.oils
