C h e c k : t h e s & u s e f u l r e a c t i o n s : H y d r o b r o m i c acid is a strong acid which reacts readily with m o s t inorganic b a s e s to p r o d u c e i n o r ganic broraides such a s lithium, sodium, potassium a n d a m m o n i u m bromide, useful I n photographic processes. It reacts w^th rrx:any aliphatic alcohols in. the p r e s e n c e of d e h y d r a t i n g agents t o p r o d u c e aliphatic bromides. Aliphatic bromides, which a r e generally onore r e a c t i v e t h a n t h e corresponding chlorides, a r e useful in the p r e p a r a t i o n of G r i g n a r d r e a g e n t s a n d o t h e r organometallic b r o mides, qua-ternary ammonium salts and as alkylating agents. Hydrobromic a c i d can b e used to cleave ethers to produce aliphatic alcohol a n d bromide. I t will also r e a c t with epoxides to p r o d u c e vicinal bromohyrh-ins w i t h two reactive centers, thus, p e r m i t t i n g m a n y a d d i tional reactive possibilities.
