Yes, in some cases you can! For example: typical Gulf Coast operation based on the SBA-Kellogg process for natural gas at a capacity of 100 million lbs./year, or greater. The SBA-Kellogg acetylene process—developed and licensed by Société Belge de l'Azote— combines low investment and low operating costs with an exceptionally high degree of designflexibility. It has been proven in two commercial plants designed by SBA. Three additional plants are scheduled for future operation. One is being engineered and erected by Kellogg in the United States. Major features contributing to the favorable economics of the SBA-Kellogg process include: 1. Efficient pyrolysis of methane or liquid hydrocarbons in burners which have now been operated successfully in commercial plants. 2. Recovery of high-purity acetylene (approaching 99.8%) using highly selective, inexpensive solvents. Also, tail gas rich in H2 and CO is recovered and can be used as feedstock for further petrochemical processing. 3. Flexibility in selecting plant operating pressure and compressor drives. This permits construction of integrated petrochemical units having a minimum over-all cost. 4. Reduced consumption of utilities and low investment in solvent inventory.
