CARBOPOL POLYMERS ARE EXCELLENT PRIMARY EMULSIFIERS, TOO! for better industrial emulsions

for better cosmetic emulsions

Tar Emulsion Tar emulsions formed with Carbopol 941 form films with excel lent water resistance, good gloss and smoothness. Consistency can be varied with Carbopol 934 or 940. % Weight Water 49.8 RT-8 Tar 49.8 Carbopol 941 resin 0.125 Sodium hydroxide (10% sol.) 0.25 Ethomeen C-25 (Armour) 0.063 Disperse Carbopol 941 in the water; then add sodium hydroxide followed by the amine. Slowly add RT-8 tar in a thin continuous stream (rate of addition no greater than dispersion rate) with good mixing. Rather high-shear agitation as with a mediumspeed Eppenbach homogenizer forms best emulsion with smallest droplets. A grainy emulsion results if tar is added too rapidly.

All-Purpose Cream A low cost very white all-purpose cream. Good emollient prop erties. % Weight Oil Phase Polawax (Croda) 8.0 Isopropyl myristate 10.0 Carnation mineral oil (Witco) 30.0 Propyl parasept 0.05 Water Phase Carbopol 960 resin 0.75 Methyl parasept 0.1 Glycerin 3.0 Water q.s. 100% Perfume q.s. Prepare oil phase in order listed. Disperse Carbopol 960 in the water; add glycerin and methyl parasept. Heat oil and water phases to 60°C. Add oil phase to water phase with moderate shear mixing. When all the oil phase is added, change to sweep agitation. Add perfume at 45°C.

Print Paste Carbopol resin use in print paste is well established. Short, buttery consistency, good color yield, reactive carboxylic groups and non-yellowing films are characteristics. % Weight Part A Water 59.22 Ammonium lauryl sulfate (25% sol.) 0.28 Carbopol 940 resin 0.5 Varsol #2 (Humble) 40.0 Ammonium hydroxide (28% sol.) q.s. pH 8.4 Part B Part A 93.6 Hycar® 2570X5 Latex (2.0 dry wt.) 4.8 Blue Slurry 1.6 Part A: Wet out Carbopol 940 in small amount of Varsol. Separ ately, add the ammonium lauryl sulfate to the water while agitating with Lightnin' mixer or equivalent. While stirring the soap-water mixture slowly add the Carbopol-Varsol slurry. Slowly add balance of Varsol and stir until homogeneous. Add ammonium hydroxide slowly to pH 8.4. Part B: Add latex and pigment to Part A while agitating. Cream Furniture Polish A thin application of this inexpensive polish develops high gloss quickly and resists smearing. Carbopol 934 is the co-emulsifier. % Weight Part A Carnauba Wax #1 yellow (Frank B. Ross) 0.22 Tween 80 (Atlas) 0.66 Water 1.914 Part B Dow Corning 922 emulsion 7.2 Water 80.4 Parte Carbopol 934 (2% in water) 10.0 PartD Morpholene 0.2 Part A: Add Tween 80 to the wax; heat to 200°F. Heat water to 200°F. With continuous stirring, add mixture to water then cool to room temperature. Add 922 Emulsion to Part A with continuous agitation; then add the water. Prepare a 2% Carbopol resin-water solution; add it to the blend of A arid B, Neutralize with the morpholene. 12 C&EN

Silicone Enriched Hand Balm A smooth, non-greasy hand balm. Carbopol 940 is the coemulsifier. % Weight Part A Stearic acid 3.5 Cetyl alcohol 1.0 Dow Corning 556 Silicone Fluid 1.5 Part B Glycerin 2.0 Carbopol 940 resin 0.5 Sodium hydroxide (10% sol.) 1.0 Ethomeen C-25 (Armour) 3.0 Methyl parasept 0.1 Propyl parasept 0.1 Water 88.3 Perfume q.s. Part A: Mix the stearic acid, cetyl, alcohol and silicone fluid; heat mixture to 70°C. Part B: Into a mixture of the water and glycerine disperse the Carbopol. Next, neutralize with sodium hydroxide then Ethomeen C-25. Last, add preservatives. Heat to 70°C. Add A to B using moderate agitation. Cool to 45°C, add perfume. Carbopol resins are used as primary emulsifiers or emulsion stabilizers in cosmetics, for creosote, tar, graphite-mineral oil, silicone oil, asphalt, etc. Carbopol resins can thicken and/or suspend in diverse systems containing trichloroethylene, zirconium oxide, urea, concentrated ammonium hydroxide, undecylic acid, alcohol, or other materials.
