C&EN CHARTS U.S. foreign trade in chemicals and related products seems headed for a record this year. Export-import activity in 1960 so far pretty well mirrors the over-all business pattern set by the industry, however. Exports, after a sharp rise in March, have leveled off since then; imports, which also climbed fast early this year, have tended to decline gradually month by month since spring. Through the first half of 1960, the U.S. chemical industry exported over $ 8 0 0 million worth of its products, a gain of about 1 5 % over exports during the like period of last year.

Strong gains were turned in by plastics materials, industrial chemicals, and coal tar products. But overseas business of chemical firms did not quite keep pace with total U.S. export trade, which has been running about 2 0 % ahead of a year ago. Chemical imports, meanwhile, are up more than 1 0 % from a year ago, totaling over $ 1 9 0 million during the first six months. General imports of all types during the first half, however, were only about 3 % higher than in 1959, and during the second quarter, over-all imports were slightly less than a year ago.
