series of columns packed with a sol vent-swollen, highly cross-linked poly styrene gel material in which separa tions are made on the basis of molecu lar size. Ε 31

Solvent refiners for maintaining and establishing the purity of solvents used for high-reliability cleaning are avail able from New Jersey Ultrasonic Corp., of Rochelle Park, N.J. UltRefine systems are available in three models: GBH, GLB, and GAZ, with efficiency ratings of about three, 10, and 20 distillation plates, respectively. Throughputs of 5, 10, and 30 gal. per hr. are common, the company says. Ε 32

Thermocouple reference chambers for use where temperatures have to be measured continuously and accurately are available from Frigistors, Ltd., of Montreal, Que. These air-cooled, automatic ice-point reference cham bers allow temperatures to be read without temperature conversion for reference junctions other than 0° C. from thermocouples or resistance ther mometers. Ε 33

Spectrophotometer capable of meas uring absorption changes of 3 X 10 - 3 optical density (O.D.) unit in

turbid media has been developed by Phoenix Precision Instrument Co., a subsidiary of Cenco Instruments Corp., Chicago. Although the dualwave length, dual-beam spectropho tometer is designed primarily for stud ies of enzyme kinetics, oxidative phos phorylations, and photosynthesis, it can be used in other areas which re quire measurement of small O.D. dif ferences in optically dense media, the Ε 34 company says.

Gas elution analyzer that uses selec tive adsorption properties of an ad sorbent bed to separate and measure components in a sample stream is available from Analytic Systems Co. According to the Pasadena, Calif., company, the components are eluted at the highest possible concentration completely independent of sample size, making accurate measurement of thermal conductivity possible. Ε 35

Sieve for particle separation in the laboratory is available from AllenBradley Co., Milwaukee, Wis. Called the Sonic Sifter, the device uses a ver tical oscillating column of air to move the material being sifted through a set of 3-in.-diameter sieves. Degree of motion is instantly and completely adjustable to the nature of the mate rial being sifted. Ε 36

NEW CHEMICALS High-purity instrument grade solvents for laboratory uses such as spectros copy and gas chromatography are available from Allied Chemical Corp., of New York City. The solvents will be analyzed and the label of each bot tle will contain the actual analytical curves for gas chromatography and spectroscopy where applicable. Also, the total number of impurities de tected by gas chromatography will be listed on the label. In addition, the label will give analysis of water by the Karl Fischer method and residue after evaporation. C 66

Thin-layer chromatography plate precoated with a highly purified cellulose free of resins and inorganic ions is available from Analtech, Inc., of Wil mington, Del. The plate, called Uniplate, features high speed separation, requires no binder, has a long shelf life, and will not flake in aqueous sol vent systems, the company says. C 67

New primary amine, designated Amberlite XKA-3, is available from Rohm & Haas Co., Philadelphia, Pa. Amberlite XLA-3 is a high-molecular-weight, oil-soluble primary amine and is sup plied as a liquid (as the free base). The high molecular weight and the NOV. 15, 1965 C & E N
