BRIEFS Research facility and commercial pilot plant for producing nylon industrial castings have been established by Polychem Division of Budd Co., of Newark, Del. Budd cast nylon products are made by polymerizing nylon 6 monomer in the mold at atmospheric pressure using a process developed by Allied Chemical Corp.

long enough for the energy released by fusion of the plasma ions to exceed the energy required to produce and maintain the plasma. The Astron device uses rotating high-energy electrons to confine the plasma and heat it to fusion temperature. The plasma is generated by ionization of neutral gas by the rotating electrons.

NEW CHEMICALS A two-year research and development program to blow-mold polyvinyl chloride containers has been completed by Creative Packaging, Inc., of Indianapolis, Ind. The firm anticipates that, in the near future, it will be able to provide blown plastic containers for many products which can't be packaged in plastics today.

Experimental facility to explore the feasibility of the Astron concept of controlled fusion is being completed at University of California's Lawrence Radiation Laboratory in Livermore, Calif. In any controlled fusion approach, basic problems are the production of a hot plasma and the subsequent confinement of the plasma

Glass-reinforced Lexan polycarbonate resin is being manufactured and sold by General Electric Co. The resin is produced at GE's polycarbonate plant at Mt. Vernon, Ind., in two grades: 20% reinforced (3312) and 40% reinforced (3314). Applications for glass-reinforced Lexan include pump impellers, weapons components, portable tool components, electrical connectors, business machine parts, and other applications which require good dimensional stability and high strength-to-weight ratio, according to GE. General-purpose epoxy casting compound with low exotherm properties is available from Hightemp Resins,

Inc., of Stamford, Conn. A 1-lb. quantity of Hightemp 5506 when cured at room temperature will set overnight to a strong, rigid, tack-free solid with an exotherm peak below 100° F., the firm says. C2

Series of copolymers for extending all types of epoxy resins has been developed by Neville Chemical Co., of Pittsburgh, Pa. Nevoxy copolymers do not affect an epoxy's original properties, according to the firm. In addition to lowering epoxy raw material costs, Nevoxy copolymers can be cured at high temperatures and have little or no effect on pot life or heat distortion. In some cases, Nevoxy-extended epoxies have improved electrical properties. Nevoxy copolymers are available in three solid and two liquid grades at prices ranging from 28.25 to 39 cents per pound. Primary alcohols for soft detergent manufacture are available in semicommercial quantities from Shell Chemical Co., of New York, N.Y. A full-scale production facility will be completed in 1965 at Shell Chemical's Houston plant. C4 JUNE
