and Michael Heinrich (“LC-MS and 1 H NMR-Based Metabolomics Analysis and in Vitro Toxicological Assessment of 43 Aristolochia Species”, J. Nat. Prod. 2016, 79, 30−37, doi 10.1021/acs.jnatprod.5b00556; first published on the ASAP feature on December 26, 2015). In turn, the 2016 Jack L. Beal Award went to the contribution by Stephanie J. Conn, Shannon M. Vreeland, Alexandra N. Wexler, Rebecca H. Pouwer, Ronald J. Quinn, and Stephen Chamberland (“Total Synthesis of Clavatadine A”, J. Nat. Prod. 2015, 78, 120−124, doi 10.1021/ np500772u). Both these papers were collaborative and involved investigators based in more than one country. The Journal of Natural Products has made these two awards every year since 2001, with the Schwarting Award being open to all corresponding authors, while the Beal Award is restricted to younger corresponding authors who are within 12 years of receiving their Ph.D. degree or within 10 years of gaining their first professional appointment. We congratulate the respective corresponding authors, Professor Heinrich and Dr. Chamberland, and their coauthors, for their success in gaining these awards. In 2016, the journal has benefitted again from having received an increased number of submissions over previous years. The journal Editors would like to take this opportunity to thank our reviewers from many different countries in all continents of the world for their very important function of helping to maintain the scientific quality of our submitted manuscripts.

he Journal of Natural Products welcomes Dr. Melany Puglisi-Weening of Chicago State University, Chicago, IL, USA, as our new Book Review Editor. She replaces Dr. John H. Cardellina II, who has served very ably in this capacity since January 2003, and to whom we are very grateful for his lengthy service. The special issue of the Journal of Natural Products in March 2017 will honor Dr. Phil Crews, a distinguished research professor of chemistry and biochemistry at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Dr. Crews is particularly well-known for his work on the discovery of biologically active compounds from sponges, and in the past he has made many field trips to the Pacific Islands to collect these organisms. In addition to being a prolific researcher, Prof. Crews is recognized for his past and present mentorship of many postdoctoral associates and graduate and undergraduate students. He is the lead author of a well-known textbook entitled Organic Structure Analysis, now in its Second Edition (2009; Oxford University Press). Prof. Crews was awarded the Norman R. Farnsworth Research Achievement Award of the American Society of Pharmacognosy (ASP) in 2008 and served as President of ASP in 2014− 2015. He has been a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the Journal of Natural Products since 2005. The Guest Editors for this special issue are Drs. Robert Cichewicz, Gordon Cragg, Roger Linington, and Amy Wright. The first of two journal cover illustrations for 2017, to be used in the January−June issues, was provided by Dr. Crews. This is entitled “Biosynthetic Products of the World” and offers a personal selection of five important natural product molecules that have individually had a major impact on human health. The cover illustration for the second half of 2017 will be supplied by Dr. Bill Baker, of the Department of Chemistry and the Center for Drug Discovery and Innovation, University of South Florida, and will feature a motif involving an organism from the Antarctic region. Over the last year, the Editors of the Journal of Natural Products have continued to select articles from the journal for the “ACS Editors’ Choice” feature (http://pubs.acs.org/ editorschoice/), which permits meritorious contributions to be published with immediate open access. Five papers from the Journal of Natural Products were chosen in 2016, with the following corresponding authors: Michael Heinrich (J. Nat. Prod. 2016, 79, 30−37; doi 10.1021/acs.jnatprod.5b00556), David J. Newman (J. Nat. Prod. 2016, 79, 628−661; doi 10.1021/acs.jnatprod.5b01055), John L. Sorensen (J. Nat. Prod. 2016, 79, 1645−1650; doi 10.1021/acs.jnatprod.6b00257), Dieter Brömme (J. Nat. Prod. 2016, 79, 1962−1970; doi 10.1021/acs.jnatprod.6b00215), and Thomas O. Larsen (J. Nat. Prod. 2016, 79, 2250−2256; doi 10.1021/acs.jnatprod.6b00345). Interested readers are encouraged to access these readily available articles. In 2016, the winning paper from the previous year selected for the Arthur E. Schwarting Award for our journal was by Johanna Michl, Geoffrey C. Kite, Stefan Wanke, Oliver Zierau, Gunter Vollmer, Christoph Neinhuis, Monique S. J. Simmons, © 2017 American Chemical Society and American Society of Pharmacognosy
