Characterization of Extremely Low Defect Density Hexadecanethiol Monolayers on Hg Surfaces Alebachew Demoz and D. Jed Harrison* Department of Chemistry, University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada T6G 2G2 Received September 8,1992. In Final Form: January 18,1993 Hexadecanethiol(HDT)formsself-assembledmonolayerson static Hg drop electrode (SMDE)surfaces. Films are formed in leas than 1 min and are extremely impermeable, indicating the absence of defects. The onset of Hg oxidation at about 0.4 V vs SCE on a bare SMDE in 0.1 M NaF is shifted anodically by 1V on an HDT-coatedSMDE. The current for R U ( N H ~ )methylviologen, ~~+, benzoquinone, and Fe(CN),? reduction at an HDT-coated SMDE is
