About the Cover The cover art, entitled "Shining" was created by Elizabeth Zaikowski o f San Diego, California. It is illustrative o f the mandate theme seen i n much o f her artwork. Mandala is the Sanskrit word for circle, and mandalas are a symbolic representation o f the macro and the micro; what lies within and without. The basic pattern o f a circle i n the center is common i n nature and is seen i n both physics and astronomy. "Shining" evokes a sense o f order arising out o f chaos, and embodies the theme o f the book i n w h i c h complex organization develops following the disarray o f the B i g Bang. Mandala art has been used throughout the world as a process o f self-expression, i n the service o f personal growth and spiritual transformation. Elizabeth creates each mandala using a combination o f airbrush and acrylic paints, and by allowing it to develop i n an organic manner, starting from the center and working outward. Through her art, she strives to create more balance i n our sometimes chaotic world. Expressing the need for balance i n life, her paintings are a reflection o f the symmetrical nature o f the universe. Y o u can view more o f her work at http://www.elizabethzaikowski.com.

Foreword The A C S Symposium Series was first published in 1974 to provide a mechanism for publishing symposia quickly in book form. The purpose of the series is to publish timely, comprehensive books developed from A C S sponsored symposia based on current scientific research. Occasionally, books are developed from symposia sponsored by other organizations when the topic is of keen interest to the chemistry audience. Before agreeing to publish a book, the proposed table of contents is reviewed for appropriate and comprehensive coverage and for interest to the audience. Some papers may be excluded to better focus the book; others may be added to provide comprehensiveness. When appropriate, overview or introductory chapters are added. Drafts of chapters are peer-reviewed prior to final acceptance or rejection, and manuscripts are prepared in camera-ready format. As a rule, only original research papers and original review papers are included in the volumes. Verbatim reproductions of previously published papers are not accepted.
