Letters Chemical Laboratory Information Profiles (CLIPs) The development of chemical laboratory information profiles (CLIPs) ( J. Chem. Educ. 2001, 78, 444) is another of Jay Young’s important contributions to promoting laboratory safety. For the academic laboratory community, and others, this simplified approach to providing relevant safety information on chemicals will often be much more useful than the OSHA-mandated Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS). Readers should also be aware of the Laboratory Chemical Safety Summaries (LCSSs) introduced in the 1995 edition of Prudent Practices in the Laboratory (National Research Council/National Academy of Sciences). These summaries, developed by Rick Danheiser of MIT, a member of the Prudent Practices Committee, serve the same purpose as Young’s CLIPs but are a little more extensive in their content.
