CHEMICALS W a t e r Repellency Increased With N e w Silicones A family of silicones designed for use in c o m m o n c o s m e t i c products has been d e v e l o p e d b y GE's silicone products d e p a r t m e n t . D e s i g n a t e d Velvasil silicones, the c h e m i c a l s are said to permit a sharp increase in water repellency a n d protective action against detergents and m a n y other common water-borne irritants. T h e Velvasil silicones are offered in a w i d e range of viscosities and, according to c o m p a n y , m a y b e incorporated into t y p i c a l c o s m e t i c formulations without n e c e s s i t y of n e w e q u i p m e n t or revolutionary manufacturing processes. chemically r e l a t e d to allethrin. I t has been n a m e d c y c l e t h r i n . C o m p a n y says cyclethrin is synergized by readily a v a i l a b l e synergists to a f a r greater e x t e n t t h a n allethrin. It can therefore b e u s e d in oil s p a c e sprays a n d in l o w pressure aerosols. Results of field tests i n d i c a t e that treadle spray c o n c e n t r a t e s c o n t a i n i n g cyclethrin afford dairy a n d beef animais excellent p r o t e c t i o n from horse flies. Cyclethrin is a l s o m o r e effectively synergized by s u l f o x i d e and piperonyl bixtoxide t h a n allethrin for k n o c k d o w n of German roaches. Toxicity o f n e w compound t o w a r m - b l o o d e d a n i m a l s is of the s a m e order as allethrin o r the pyxethrîns. CS 2
