NEW LOW-DENSITY URETHANE FOAM SYSTEM To answer the need for even lower density urethane foams, BASF Wyandotte has developed a new system for frothed and poured insulation applications. This system provides low-density urethane foams with significant cost-performance improvements over conventional systems without sacrificing thermal insulating characteristics, ease of application or dimensional stability. It is expected to particularly benefit manufacturers of refrigeration equipment. They can realize important savings because this system costs no more than conventional urethane systems. Foams with in-place densities as low as 1.5-1.6 pcf. can be produced. Consequently, 25% less weight of foam is required to fill a given cavity than with conventional 2 pcf. foams . . . a significant cost savings. And foams based on this system show excellent resistance to low temperature shrinkage.

Chemicals Outlook

Using the ASTM C177 test method, initial K-factors as low as 0.115 have been obtained with foams based on this new system. Therefore, manufacturers can maintain standard wall thicknesses (cavities) established for urethane insulated equipment. As the system exhibits excellent flowability in refrigerator box cavities plus extended gel times, the foam has ample opportunity to fill voids before curing begins, minimizing possibilities of thermal leaks. Foams based on this system can be poured or frothed using standard techniques and equipment.
