Chemistry and the Experiment in the Secondary Schools
When the evolution of the discipline of chemistry is described. what usuallv occunies the attention of the person making the description is the discipline's great experiments. The works of Dalton, Mendeleev, Le Chatelier, and others who have done the landmark experiments in chemistry are usually found amone such descri~tious. The theoretical work of such persons as Bohr also occupies a prominent place in the description of chemistrv. Even that theoretical work, however, is aimed at describing phenomena which are nearly inextrical,lr from experimentation. Central to the development and continued growth of the discipline of chrmistry is theexper. irnent; the experimrnt and the [heoretical mmaCity, February 22, 19701,published interview, p. 28
