Chemistry Comes Alive!, Volume 2

Abstract of Special Issue 21 on CD-ROM Compiled by Jerrold J. Jacobsen and John W. Moore Department of Chemistry, University of Wisconsin–Madison, Madison, WI 53706

Chemistry Comes Alive! Volume 2 is the second in a series of CD-ROMs for Macintosh and Windows computers. Chemistry Comes Alive, Volume 1 (1), is also available from JCE Software. Chemistry truly does come to life through this collection of pictures, animations, and movies depicting chemical reactions. In Chemistry Comes Alive!, the emphasis is on the chemistry. Reactions are shown close up. Only where scale is important can more than the demonstrators’ hands be seen. Most movies in Chemistry Comes Alive! include a voice-over narration. The sound of a reaction is included when it is important. Each reaction or demonstration illustrates an important aspect of chemistry, may involve substances or equipment that are not available in many schools, and/or is hazardous or causes problems of disposal or cleanup. All are certain to stimulate students’ curiosity and help them learn. The Chemistry Comes Alive! collection is derived from the images previously published by JCE Software in ChemDemos Videodisc (2), ChemDemos II (3), and Titration Techniques Videodisc (4) as well as new video, graphics, and animations. The collection is divided into several CD volumes on related topics as recommended by a group of chemistry educators. Volume 2 contains several related topics generally included in an introductory chemistry course. The topics are divided into four chapters, Electronic Structure/Periodic Table, Bonding, Solids/Liquids, and Solutions. Specific topics included in the chapters are shown in the box. The Chemistry Comes Alive! CD-ROMs are organized in the manner of a World Wide Web site. You access their contents with a browser such as Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer. vides links to JCE Online where you will find resources that complement the CD, including a consolidated index for all volumes of Chemistry Comes Alive! as they are developed, instructional materials that utilize Chemistry Comes Alive!, and previews of all the Chemistry Comes Alive! volumes. See http://jchemed.chem.wisc.edu/JCESoft/CCA/ for previews of Volumes 1 and 2 using movies that are smaller in size and of lesser quality than those on the CD. How To Use This CD-ROM The movies on this CD-ROM are 320 × 240 pixel QuickTime movies and can be played directly using MoviePlayer on the Macintosh or Media Player in Windows. Images from the CD can be easily incorporated into multimedia presentations or lessons. Use of the Bookmark function of the Web browser is a particularly convenient method of organizing material for a lecture or for a student lesson.
