Chemistry from Outside the Classroom Alan Kruse Pima Community College. Tucson. AZ 85709 Three activities are being used in the second semester of our chemistry course for allied health majors to show the relevance of chemistly to the health sciences. These activities are (1) the assignment of two . papers analyzing . . . articles from the health science journals dealing with chemistry; (2) the summarizing of television program that relate to chemistry and the health professions; and (3) the presentation of a series of special lecturps on chemistry-based health science topics. Certain portions of these actkities have been used in class over the past two years while others have been tested over a shorter period. Actlvlty: Analyzing the Health Science Literature The first activity is the writing of papers that analyze articles dealing with chemistry that appear in the health science literature. The object is to motivate thestudents by showing them that chemistry is, indeed, a part of their major, and that they will he involved with chemistry long after the course ends.
