In addition, one can envisage two other potentially very i m p o r t a n t niches for commercial A F S . First, solid me tallic samples can readily be analyzed by cathodic s p u t t e r i n g a n d A F S (30). Such a device obviates t h e need for wet chemical s a m p l e p r e p a r a t i o n a n d has t h e potential for yielding very high precision in closely related appli cation analyses. An i n s t r u m e n t dedi cated to this t y p e of analysis would be welcomed by t h e metallurgical i n d u s try. Second, nondispersive a t o m i c flu orescence s p e c t r o m e t r y can be used as a resonance d e t e c t o r for emission s p e c t r o m e t r y (49). Metal s a m p l e s em ployed as c a t h o d e s in a glow discharge l a m p can be easily analyzed yielding very high precision d a t a . W h e t h e r A F S becomes a c o m m e r cial t e c h n i q u e awaits t h e well-known, hard-nosed appraisal of t h e instru m e n t m a n u f a c t u r e r s . It would seem, however, t h a t p r e s e n t prospects war r a n t such consideration.

Chemistry in Medicine The Legacy and the Responsibility

An ACS Study by the Committee on Chemistry and Public Affairs Chemistry's role in providing im proved health care products and pro cedures. Ideal for legislators, government offi cials, consumer advocates, industry scientists, and managers, this study ex amines what chemical research related to health care has accomplished in the past and discusses how that chemical research operates today. This volume also assesses the implica tions for research of society's attitudes and of laws and regulations pertaining to chemical health care products and procedures. CONTENTS Summary and Recommendations · Social Attitudes and the Future for Drugs · Health Care Needs. Organizations, and Research · The Origin-, of Drugs · The Contributions of Basic Research · Drugs for Heart Patients · Chemistry in the Attack on Oncer «Ther apeutic Uses of Polypeptide Hormones «The Control of Human Fertility «The Prosta glandins in Therapy · Prevention and Treatment of Genetic Disease «Chemicals vs. Mental Illnesses «The Relief of Pain «Chem ical Immunosuppressants in Transplantation and Immunoinfiammatory Diseases · Diag nostic Tests and Modern Therapy · Appen dixes: Hihliography of Suggested Readings · Major Disease Targets for Drug Therapy · Major (Masses of Drugs · Index 138 pages (1977) Paperback $8.00 LC 76-5B883 ISBN 0-8412-0410-1

Jon Van Loon earned his PhD in ana lytical chemistry from the University of Toronto in 1964, and has been on the staff there ever since. His re search interests include atomic ab sorption, fluorescence, and emission spectrometry.
